MODULE WEEK 1-4

Most Essential Learning Competency

1. Explain how the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom describes the energies and positions of
the electrons
2. Recognize different types of compound (ionic or covalent bond) based on their properties such as
melting point, hardness, polarity, and electrical and thermal conductivity
3. Explain how ions are formed

I. Lesson 1: To Share or to Transfer: Ionic and Covalent Bond

II. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, I can:
a. observe the physical properties of some substances;
b. classify a compound based on its type of chemical bond
c. differentiate types of chemical bond and
d. infer the significance of chemical bonding

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1
Pre-assessment

A. For each word, draw or write a symbol that you associated with it. Explain why you chose that
symbol.

WORD Drawing or Symbol of the Word

1. Bonding

2. Ionic

3. Covalent

4. Attraction

5. Sharing

6. Transferring
B. Based on the symbol that you have drawn or written, write the meaning of each word on the blank
below.

1. Bonding _________________________________________________________________________

2. Ionic _________________________________________________________________________

3. Covalent ________________________________________________________________________

4. Attraction________________________________________________________________________

5. Sharing ________________________________________________________________________

Activity 3
Chemical Bond Song

A. Direction: Follow the link below and listen to the song about Chemical Bonding in the Tune of Dancing
Queen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kscpRNX4AIQ

Oooh yeah, Ionic bonds … covalent bonds … both of them chemical bonds.
How are they made? What’s the dif-ference? Watch you’ll see!

First we’ll start with ionic bonds,

A metal and nonmetal are involved.
The metal gives over electrons, the nonmetal … it receives.
The atoms become IONS!

The metals might have 1,2 or 3

Electrons for the nonmetal to receive
It all depends on what’s needed, to make the number 8
For the nonmetals’ outer shell.

AND IF IT HAPPENS FOR THEM …

They both become IONS …… CHARGED ATOMS …. They become IONS!
The metal’s positive, the nonmetal’s negative,
They become IONS, oh yeah.
The metal’s plus, the nonmetal minus, and opposites they do attract.
So what you get, when they come together, is an IONIC BOND.

So what about those covalent bonds?

It’s not about loss or gain of electrons.
Valence electrons they are shared, to complete the outer shells
Of the nonmetals set to bond.

IT’S WHEN NONMETALS JOIN … to make covalent bonds

With shared electrons .... they’re covalent bonds.
Not a transfer, instead they share valence electrons, oh yeah!

Ionic bonds … covalent bonds … both of them chemical bonds.

How are they made? What’s the dif-ference? Play the song again!
Ionic bonds, covalent bonds ….. both chemical bonds!

B. Based on the song above, compare and contrast Ionic Bonding from Covalent Bonding, write your
answer inside the Venn diagram.

Activity 4
Ionic Bonding LED

Direction: Use Lewis dot structures to show the ionic bonding in the following pairs of
elements. Show the transfer of electrons using arrows. Write the correct chemical formula for
the ionic compound that forms.

1) barium oxide (Ba and O) 4) sodium iode (Na and I)

Formula: _____Ba+2O-2 _____ Formula:

2) calcium oxide (Ca and O) 5) sodium flouride (Na and F)
