ACTIVITY NO.____

Most Essential Learning Competencies

1. Calculate the empirical formula from the percent composition of a compound
2. Write and balanced chemical equations
3. Calculate molecular formula given molar mass

I. Lesson 4: Atoms in Reaction

II. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, I can:
a. determine the molar mass of elements and compounds
b. calculate percent composition of a compound from its chemical formula
c. write and balance chemical equations

III. Activity Proper

The mass of one mole of an element or compound is called its Molar Mass. It is Expressed in
grams/ mole, the molar mass is obtained as the sum of the product of the atomic masses and the
number of atoms of every element that comprises the compound.

Example:
Calculate the molar mass of sodium phosphate (Na 3PO4). What will be the mass of one mole of Na 3PO4?

Atomic Masses
Na= 22.99 amu
P= 30.97 amu
O= 16.00 amu

ACTIVITY 1
Molar Mass

Direction: Solve the following problems and show the complete solution.

1. Calculate the molar mass of acetaminophen (C 8H9NO2), an over-the-counter pain reliever also known
as paracetamol.

2. Calculate the molar mass of glucose (C6H12O6), the main energy source of our body that is also known
as dextrose or blood sugar.
Percent Composition and Chemical Formulas
The mass of each element in a chemical formula as well as its percent composition in the
compound may be obtained. The general formula for calculating the percent composition of an element
in a compound is given by:

Sample Problem
What is the percentages of each element in the compound Sodium Carbonate?

Direction: Solve the following problem and show your complete solution.
1. Tartaric acid (C4H6O6) is naturally found in fruits like grapes and banana. It is used in the food industry
as a leavening agent that gives a sour taste. Determine the percent composition of each element in the
compound.

Activity 3
Balancing Chemical Equation

Direction: Balance the following chemical equation

1. ___AgI +___ Na2S ___Ag2S +___ NaI

2. ___Na3PO4 + ___HCl ___NaCl + ___H3PO4
3. ___Ba3N2 + ___H2O ___Ba(OH)2 + ___NH3
4. ___TiCl4 + ___H2O ___TiO2 + ___HCl
5. ___CaCl2 + ___Na3PO4 ___Ca3(PO4)2 +___NaCl
6. ___NaBr + ___Cl2 ___NaCl + ___Br2
