ETABS COLUMN DESIGN RESULT OBSERVATION

IMPORTANT OBSERVATION: (in case you have not

noticed)

1. While designing for biaxial columns, if the analysis moments are less than minimum design
moments (based on minimum eccentricity- Mmin = Pu (15+.03h)) in both the directions
simultaneously,
then the final design will be based on the worst of the following two cases:

a. M2 = M2min
M3 = M3
b. M2 = M2
M3 = M3 min
The design should not be based on M2= M2min and M3= M3 min. It is sufficient to ensure that
eccentricity exceeds the minimum about one axis at a time.

It should be further noted that in case both the above cases results in rebar % less than 1 %,
ETABS will report the results for
M2 = M2
M3 = M3 min

2. In case when the analysis moment in one direction exceeds the minimum design moment, the
design should be based on the following case:

For example, M2 > M2min and M3 <M3min

The design is to be based on M2 = M2 and M3= M3min
