Methods of mapping

To map an area, the traverses are planned before. Traversing is basically a method of

controlling our progress across country rock, So that you do not have to relocate yourself.

From scratch every time you make an observation at an outcrop. These are following types of

the traverses method are used during geological mapping.

1. Strike traverse

2. Dip traverse

3. Radial traverse

4. Offset traverse

5. Contact follow method

2.3.2.1 STRIKE TRAVERSE METHOD

It is a type of traverse done along the strike of the rock. It is used to trace the lateral extension

of a particular bed and the contact between two lithological units.

Field observation: -

Location:- About 1 km away from the Jonk river bridge on the road joining Rajadevri to

Nageri. We found same type rock.

2.3.2.2 Dip Traverse Method

It is a type of traverse done along or opposite the dip direction. Down dip traverse is traversed

towards dip direction. Up dip traverse is traversed towards opposite of dip direction (180° to

dip direction). In this traverse, different lithologies may be found.

Fig 2.3.2.2 Dip Traverse Method

Field observation: -

Location: - About 200 m from the nala along Jonk river towards Nageri in N70° direction.

We found variation of rock.

Rock type: - Rudaceous sedimentary rock (Polymictic Conglomerate).

2.3.2.3 Radial Traverse Method

In this method traverse are planned from central point to every possible direction and mark

the contact between the litho units and join those contact mark. This method is used is used in

usually in hilly area and igneous terrain.

2.3.2.4 Offset Traverse Method.

In this type of traverse offsets are taken perpendicular from linear features like canal, river,

road, etc., at regular intervals.

Advantage: saves the time

Disadvantage: Due to intervals important features present in between may be missed.

Field observation: -

Location: In the Bhusripali hill near the triple junction of the road joining Nawagaon, Arjuni

and Bhusripali.

Method: - we stood on linear feature that is a road on the side of the hillock at 50m interval.

The person stood on the first point took the bearing of the person stood on the second

position at a certain interval.

From the first point another person went in search of a contact towards the hillock. When he

found the exposure the person stood in first position took bearing of that person and the

person stood near the exposure took pacing from the exposure to the first point. The same

technique is adapted in each 50m interval and we found a sketched view of that area. This is

the Offset Traverse Method.

2.3.2.5 Contact Follow Method

In this type of traverse contact between two different lithologies is traced. Contact follow

traverse is strike traverse in case of sedimentary rocks.
