Simple Present Tense A1.1

The simple present tense is used to explain some General Knowledge, Habits,
or General Facts.

Examples:
1. I eat breakfast every morning. (Habit)
2. Water freezes at zero degrees (General Knowledge)
3. She loves her boyfriend very much (General Fact)

Formula

• If the subjects are HE, SHE, IT, the verb always ends in -s:
he wants, she needs, he gives, she thinks.
• If the subject is I, YOU, THEY, WE, then the verb doesn’t need -s
• Verbs ending in -y change the -y to -ies:
fly --> flies, cry --> cries
Exception: if there is a vowel before the -y:
play --> plays, pray --> prays
• Add -es to verbs ending in:-ss, -x, -sh, -ch:
he passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes
• Irregular verbs:
Go -> Goes
Do -> Does
• If it’s a question, the “Does” or “do” (depends on the subject) is at the
beginning of the sentence, followed by subject, and basic verb.
Ex:
- Does he like to play badminton?
- Do they even listen to me when I talk?
- Does she do her homework every night?
