Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense shows that you are talking about something that has already
happened and is finished.
The formula for Simple Past Tense is

Subject + To Be (is, am, are) Subject + Verb 2 (-ed)

Subject + Was/Were Subject + Verb 2


“They were friends in high school.” “She worked yesterday”
“I was sad to know that she’s going away.” “I did my homework last night”

Subject + Wasn’t/Weren’t Subject + Did Not + Verb 1


“We weren’t friends in high school.” “She did not work yesterday.”
“I wasn’t worried about it.” “I did not go to the mall last night.”

Was/were + Subject Did + Subject + Verb 1


“Were you friends in high school?” “Did she work yesterday?”
“Was I asleep on your couch last night?” “Did I sleep on the couch?”

Not ALL Verb 2 only added -ed at the end of the word. They are called Irregular Verbs.
