Product Design Research - CNC Wooden Sign

Appearance

The sign for the outdoor classroom is visually

appealing. Its interesting font is easy to read and

the sign is colourful so it draws the attention of

passersby. The colours must be contrasting so that

the sign stands out and it is best to use a light

colour on a darker background such as: white on black or yellow on black, etc. The sign is large

enough to be seen from a fair distance but it is important to keep in mind that the largest piece of

wood that we can work with is 30 inches long x 20 inches wide. An image is preferably included

on the sign to make it even more captivating to the target audience.

Effectiveness

The sign effectively draws the

attention of students, teachers, etc. to

the outdoor classroom. They are

enticed to use the outdoor classroom

and garden for learning.

Target audience

The CNC carved sign is designed to draw the attention of students and teachers so that they use

the outdoor classroom and vegetable planters, but it is also to draw the attention of local people

in the neighbourhood that may walk by. This allows them to be aware of what is happening in

the community.

Durability/weather resistant

The sign withstands the harsh climates and snow of winter and

year round rain showers. It has a protective coat of varnish so

the wood does not rot.

Location

The outdoor classroom sign must be in a location that allows it to be visible from a distance. It

must be seen by teachers and students so that they are persuaded to use the space.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD EFFECTIVE SIGN?

Essential Items to Include Desirable Items to Include

- Large, legible font - An image/symbol/logo

- Short, clear message - Empty space so it is not overwhelming

- Minimal writing/information

Conclusion:

When making a sign for the outdoor classroom, I must keep in mind its appearance, location and

durability in order for it to be long lasting, effective and able to draw in the target audience. The

sign must be visually appealing with a large, legible font as well as graphics in order to attract

the attention of teachers and students who may want to use the outdoor space. In addition, the

sign must be strategically placed to be visible to passersby. In conclusion, these factors are all

crucial in order to design the ideal sign for the outdoor classroom.

For example, this sign is effective

because it has minimal writing, a

simple image/logo and has contrasting

colours so that it stands out. For these

reasons, it can be seen from a distance

and draws the attention of the public.

- Outdoor Classroom welcome sign

- Signs to encourage COVID-19 safety (masks on, stay 6ft apart, etc.)

- Environmental signs (no littering, don’t touch the gardens, etc.)
