What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the following instructional
materials:
Materials Advantages
Charts, Posters, A poster speaks for itself; the
presence of its author is not
Bulletin Boards necessary. It is therefore possible
to reach a broader audience
when compared to a presentation
limited in time.
Chalkboards Through chalkboard, the students
can improve or develop their
thinking ability and visualize their
own ideas.

you can change the sequence
of your presentation at any
time.
Hand outs It gives anxious learners an
opportunity to prepare on the
topic.
Audiotapes, CDs Audiotapes overcomes ambient
noise levels and distributes the
Audio teacher’s voice at the same
amplified level throughout the
classroom.
Using audiotapes report less need
for repeating of instruction.
Videotapes, Videotapes are mostly very
demonstration friendly. It gives
Films, CDs Visual,
instance notes, whenever
DVD required can visualize the video
and topic will be revised and can
also make notes.
Disadvantages
Posters generally require reduced content as well
as getting to the point. Selecting what has to be
included or omitted is not always easy.
Chalkboard is not applicable in dark areas and is
not appropriate for students having visual
impairments.
Resolution Problem - In order for a large classroom
to see items clearly, the overhead projector needs
to be at the perfect distance and angle. Panoramic
views are very difficult to achieve and the inability
to read slides can be distracting to observers.
Not easy to move to another place.
It can be the source of distraction to the class when
the teacher starts to discuss the topic of the
student will be on the handouts.
Inability to know how to extract information from
text successfully. There pace of the recited material
may not be appropriate for all students as these
often have varying experiential backgrounds and
attention span ranges.

important for learning.

which will help students to
communicate with them
concisely.

computer or teachers won’t have to spend a
slide projector lot of time writing notes on the
blackboard, this saves a lot of
time and effort that could well be
utilized for teaching.
Computers come with so many options all which
can make a student addictive. Some of the are
social media and games. While studying, students
could end up being distracted and waste their
valuable time. Even during studies, students will
have problems in concentration. This could bring
an impact on students’ education.
People who are left-handed also face some
problems when they have to write on the
whiteboard as most left handers tend to smudge
the content that they have already written because
of the way they hold the pen and write on it.
It can distract students’ attention and not focus to
the lesson that the teacher teaching.
A projector will also need a power source during its
use, projectors will be a disadvantage to have if
your school doesn’t have a reliable power source.
