Record a debate.

J: Good morning teacher, we are Blanca and Jessica, and next, we are going to present
our debate about a topic related to medicine. To be exact, we will argue around this
statement: governments should force people to lead healthier lives. So, let's get started.

B: In the contemporary world, people have faced several health ailments like obesity,
anorexia, chronic illnesses due to several reasons. It is often argued that who should be
responsible: government or individual for people's health. Some people think that a
healthy lifestyle is an individual choice, while others believe governments should force
people to lead healthier lives. So, what do you think about this Jessy?

J: Well, personally, I strongly believe that a healthy lifestyle is a choice that should be
decided by individuals rather than the government of a country.

B: Why?

J: I feel that our lifestyle, activity patterns, food habits, diet reflects our beliefs, family
background, the region we come from, the culture and tradition we follow. Similarly,
the choice to opt for the gym, yoga, and meditation is purely an individual’s right.

B: You’re absolutely right that a healthy lifestyle is a habit, and this is a choice made
by an individual, but from my point of view, a government also has an essential role to
play to ensure a better lifestyle for its citizens. For example, in our own country where
the government cannot ensure proper education, health care facilities, recreation, and
economic development, people usually lead an unhealthy life here.

J: I’m not sure I agree. The trouble is that the government can make sure better
healthcare, exercise, and entertainment facilities throughout the country: but if
someone does not have the habit of leading a healthy life, the government has nothing
to do about it. Wouldn't it?

B: I’d definitely like to challenge the idea that if someone does not want to be healthy,
then the government has nothing to do about it. We can clearly see that government
can bring significant changes by implementing many laws, policies, action plans, and
promoting awareness campaigns in terms of health and lifestyle.
J: It's a good point what you just said, but let me ask you this: Isn't it absolutely
contrary to respect for basic human rights if people are completely deprived of the
freedom to choose their own lifestyle?

B: Obviously, people will not be completely deprived of the freedom to choose their
own lifestyle. Rather, the government will guide people to make their own decisions
by providing them with enough health information and encouraging them to lead
healthier lives.

J: That's all for today, and considering both viewpoints, we can conclude that the
healthy lifestyle of citizens in a country is a combination of individual choice and
government initiatives and policy. Therefore, we feel that each person should choose a
healthy lifestyle while the government of any country should ensure proper facilities to
make it easier. Thank you.
