1. M1 and M2 are mixed to produce a solution that will be distributed into two tanks as
shown on the diagram below. Find how much of components A and B are there in M1 if
M4 is twice as much as M5.

SOLUTION:
m5 = 200 kg/hr
m4 = (200 kg/hr)(2) = 400 kg/hr
m1 = m4
m2 = m5
Material balance over K
m3 = m4 + m5
m3 = 400 kg/hr + 200 kg/hr
m3 = 600 kg/hr

Material balance over mixer:

m1 + m2 = m3
m1 + m2 = 600 kg/hr
Component A balance over mixture
(m1)(0.9) + m2 = (600)(0.75)
0.9 m1 + m2 = 450 -------- (a)
Component B balace over mixture
(m1)(0.1) + m2 = (600)(0.25)
0.1 m1 + m2 = 150 -------- (b)
Solving equation a
0.9 m1 + m2 = 450
450
0.9 m1 = 450 m1 = = 500 kg/hr
0.9
Solving equation b
0.1 m1 + m2 = 150
(0.1)( 500) + m2 = 150
m2 = 150 – [(0.1)( 500)]
m2 = 100 kg/hr
FINAL ANSWER:
Composition A
(0.9)( m1) = (0.9)( 500 kg/hr) = 450 kg/hr
Composition B
(0.1)(m1) = (0.1)( 500 kg/hr) = 50 kg/hr

2. One liter of ethyl alcohol is mixed with 1 L of water at 20 degrees Celsius, how many
kilograms of the solution result?

GIVEN:

V1 = Ethyl Alcohol (CH3CH2OH) = 1 L = 1000 mL

V2 = Water (H2O) = 1 L = 1000 mL
ρ 1 = ρ alcohol = 0.789 g/mL
ρ 2 = ρ water = 0.998 g/mL

SOLUTION:

M1 + M2 = P

M1 = ρ 1V1 M2 = ρ 2V2
= (0.789 g/mL)*(1000 mL) = (0.998 g/mL)*(1000 mL)
= 789 g = 998 g
M1 = 0.789 kg M2 = 0.998 kg
P = M1 + M2
P = 0.789 kg + 0.998 kg
P = 1.787 kg ≈ 1.8 kg

FINAL ANSWER:
P = 1.8 kg

3. How much water should be evaporated in order to produce a 25% KCl solution having
a Feed of 100 kg with 9% KCl solution?

SOLUTION:

Feed

100 kg
9% KCl solution

(100)(0.09) = 9 kg KCl solution

100 - 9 = 91 kg water

Output

25% KCl solution

100 - x

(100)(0.09) = (100 - x) (0.25)

    9 =   25 - 0.25x
9 - 25 =  -0.25x
    -16   =  -0.25x
  -16-0.25 =  x
64 = x

To compute water balance:

Given: S = 4.73% or 0.0473

W = 9.31% or 0.0931

Cw = 5.20% or 0.052

Equation 2: 0.0473 S + 0.0931 W = 0.052 Cw

To compute the water balance on the gas in the dryer:

Given: Cw = 5.20% or 0.052

Moles of water removed to gas = 1.481481481 lb/mol

W = 9.31% or 0.0931

To compute the water gas balance on the dryer:

0.948 Cw = (0.9069) (W+R)

(W+R) = (0.948/0.9069) Cw

(W+R) = 1.045319219 Cw

Solving for the equation 3 to get the value of Cw:

0.052 Cw + 1.481481481 = 0.0931 (W+R)

0.052 Cw + 1.481481481 = 0.0931 (1.045319219 Cw)

0.052 Cw + 1.481481481 = 0.09731921932

1.481481481 = 0.04531921932 Cw

Cw = 32.68991618 lb/mol

Putting the value of Cw in equation 1 and 2:

S + W = Cw

S + W = 32.68991618

0.0473 S + 0.0931 W = 0.052 Cw

0.0473 S + 0.0931 W = (0.052) (32. 68991618)

0.0473 S + 0.0931 W = 1.699875641

Solving for recycle gas:

R = Cw - S

R = 32.68991618 – 29.318

R = 3.37191618
