The discovery of Newton’s three laws is indeed an impactful scientific breakthrough of the last

300 years. The discovery has guided modern mechanics, and the knowledge of the laws which
govern nature has allowed us to better utilize these knowledge to our advantage.

For instance, parachutes were designed to provide high air resistance to a parachutist in free
fall, so that the upwards up thrust would gradually be equal to the downwards weight force of
the parachutist, reaching terminal velocity. Have you ever wondered why pushing another
person while on an ice rink would cause motion of both parties? This is related to Newton’s 3rd
law, whereby there is an equal and opposite force, and for every action, there is an equal and
opposite reaction force countering such motion.

Such physics discoveries are considered breakthroughs. Hydraulic press mechanisms in cars
make use of the formula, pressure equals to force divided by area. This results in a seemingly
force multiplier effect, which allows us to lift large loads by applying a large force on a relatively
small area. Such inventions, like the hydraulic press, are definitely ingenious, as they have
revolutionized the way we humans do things, and has introduced much convenience and ease.
