Newtons laws of motion –Make a model to show one or the 3 laws of
motion in action.
SUBJECTS INVOLVED:
Physics
Mathematics
SUMMARY OF PROJECT:
High school students construct a model that to show Newton’s Laws of motion
in action.
EXPECTED LEARNING AND INDICATORS:
The student understands the concept of the Laws of motion according to
Newton.
METHODOLOGY:
PROJECT BASED LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE WORK
1. Research on 3 laws of motion.
2. Brainstorm forces and motion.
3. Design of the prototype of the model Drawings and plan of action.
4. Construction of a prototype that demonstrates the laws of motion.
5. Display of product to audience.

INVESTIGATION:

The study of physics offers us fundamental insights into the behavior of objects
and the forces that influence their motion. Sir Isaac Newton's three laws of
motion are foundational principles in this field, describing how forces interact
with objects to cause changes in their motion. The third law states that for
every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this investigation, we
design and construct a prototype a trampoline made of a glass cup with a
balloon top and a jumping marble that effectively showcases the third law of
motion and the concept of inertia; But first we need to analyze the laws of
motion:

The three laws of motion, formulated by Sir Isaac Newton, are fundamental
principles that describe the relationship between the motion of an object and
the forces acting on it.

First Law of Motion (Law of Inertia):

An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted
upon by an external, unbalanced force.

Second Law of Motion:

The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force applied and
inversely proportional to its mass. This is expressed by the equation F = ma
(Force = mass × acceleration).

Third Law of Motion:

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When one object
exerts a force on another, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force
on the first.

Discussion
The prototype vividly depicted Newton's third law of motion, emphasizing that
every force exerted on an object prompts an equal and opposite force in return.
The trampoline-like setup allowed us to visualize how the marble's pressure on
the balloon surface led to the balloon "bouncing" back, illustrating the action
and reaction in this closed system.

MATERIALS / EQUIPMENT:
 Glass cup
 Balloon
 Marble

PROCEDURE:
 Cut the top part of the balloon and stretch it over the opening of the glass
cup to create a trampoline-like surface.
 Place the marble on top of the balloon surface.
 Apply pressure to the marble, causing it to depress the balloon (action).
 Observe and record the upward motion of the marble (reaction),
demonstrating the third law of motion.

RESULTS:

The prototype successfully demonstrated the third law of motion as the marble's
downward action on the balloon caused an equal and opposite upward reaction.
This showcased the law of inertia, illustrating how an object at rest tends to stay
at rest unless acted upon by an external force, and conversely, an object in
motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force.

demonstrated Newton's third law of motion. By incorporating the action-reaction

principle and the concept of inertia, this hands-on demonstration helps to
deepen our understanding of fundamental physics principles. Such practical
experiments are essential for enhancing comprehension and fostering an
appreciation for the laws governing the motion of objects.

TEACHERS COMMENTS: Good team work, you showed how Newton’s 3 rd law
is put in to action, using action and action forces. The project was very simple
but it was a good example, well done , great work!
