BIE1013 – Principle and Practice of
Urban Planning
Assignment
Semester 2 2022/2023

TASKS

1. Each group will be given a layout plan.

2. Each group is required to submit an Assessment of the Layout Plan and Development Proposal
Report based on the layout plan.

3. The Assessment of the Layout Plan should include:

a. Description of the components in the layout plan
b. Assessment of the layout plan
c. Suggestions on improvements of the components in the layout plan

4. The Development Proposal Report should include:

a. Introduction
b. Site background and profiles including the description of the characteristics of the site
c. Land title and the relevant information (if any)
d. Land use discussion – issues and problems
e. Analysis of the site
f. The proposed development components
g. Planning consideration and requirements.
h. Conclusion must incorporate advice and recommendations accordingly.

5. Interim (Data collection) – 10%

This will include preparing the base maps, inventory lists etc. You will be working in groups. At this
stage, you are not just collecting data, but you also must identify the: potentials, constraints, and the issues
and problems of the site.
 Development Proposal Report (Analysis and Findings) – 20%
Based on the data that you have collected; this stage requires groups to analyse the existing condition
of the site. Your analysis will also include the potentials, constraints, and the issues and problems of the
site. Your findings are expected to be shown as graphics representations with some brief notes. Various
methods of presentations can be used example overlays, map, or symbol maps, and photographs.
 Introduction
 Site background and profiles including the description of the characteristics of the site
 Land title and the relevant information
 Circulation – Regional and Local Context
 Existing and Surrounding Development
 Basic topography analysis
 Summary of impact analysis – physical, economy, environment and social

Assessment of Layout Plan (Layout Appreciation) – 10%

This section should explain in detail the ideas, design solutions and physical recommendations to solve
problems or improve the urban environment in the study area. Supporting illustrations and drawings for
specific locations must be included to support your justifications and recommendations.

Evaluation of the proposed development components

Compliance to the policies and guidelines
Proposed improvement to the existing layout based on the following :
 Planning consideration and requirements.
 Details of the proposed development including demand and supply analysis of the proposed
development.

Presentation – 10%
You must present the Development Proposal Report and the Assessment of Layout Plan in Week 13 or Week
14.

6. The report must be prepared in English of not less than 3,000 words; contain a cover page including the
name of course, name of students, title of assignment and date. The format of the report is not fixed,
however; please include photographs, plans, diagrams, and other relevant materials that may support
the clarity of the report.

7. This submission of the assessment of the layout plan and development proposal report is due in Week 12.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION

1. Each student must be involved in the preparation of this assignment.

2. Each group must elect a group leader and every meeting must be recorded and attached in the final Report.
3. Each student is required to do a peer assessment on his/her group members’ contribution and cooperation
in assignment preparation. This assessment must be submitted in a seal envelope individually to Dr Sr
Zafirah Al Sadat Zyed (a Peer Assessment form is attached). Failure to submit the Peer
Assessment form will cause 10% of the individual marks to be deducted.
