1. Introduction
1.1. Elevator
A helping device that moves cargo or persons vertically between decks, levels, or floors
of a building, ship, or other structure. Although some pumps hydraulic fluid to elevate a
cylindrical piston like a jack, they are often powered by electric motors that drive traction
cables and counterweight systems like a hoist.

1.2. Egyptian Code for Elevator

The codes are designed to control and standardize the procedures for manufacture,
inspection, and maintenance. To make life simpler and safer, the Egyptian code for
elevators addresses all of these issues relating to the elevators' workings and guarantees
the highest standards of quality and safety. The regulations created for testing,
experimentation, record keeping, and maintenance will be thoroughly addressed in this
report to enable the reader to comprehend these standards and implement them as needed.

2. Documents required for a License to install an Elevator.

2.1. Initial Application
The Technical specs file must guarantee that the Lift parts have been appropriately
developed and that the assembly has been compliant before requesting the initial license.
The following documents and records must be included in the technical specifications
file:
✓ The Names and Locations of the Manufacturers.
✓ The Models of the Equipment.
✓ The Lift's Stroke and any necessary Stoppings.
✓ The lift's rated Weight, Speed, and number of Passengers.

2.1.1. Technical Drawing

Figure 2 Sketch of the Keche elevator and allusion to INDIAmart

The Mechanical Drawings need to show elevations, plans, and sections that adequately
display the equipment within the pulley space. Although they don't have to be excessively
detailed, they must include the following:
✓ Sufficient space at the top and bottom of the well, as well as any additional details
that need to be accessed in those areas.
✓ The placement and dimensions of assembly holes, machinery space, drive pulley,
examination and emergency doors, the car, and the steps doors (if there are two
identical doors, only one needs to be included).
✓ Ventilation holes and pulley space holes.
✓ The distance between the car door and the inner surface of the well.
✓ Calculations of the rope's safety factor, motion factors, and well cushioning must also
be included.

2.1.2. Technical calculations

The documents must include the necessary computations for the following:
✓ Pulling and specific pressure.
✓ Overspeed governor robe properties (diameter, weight, safety factor)
✓ Motion factors and surface condition (cold formed or rough machined or surface
grinded)

2.1.3. Electric Circuit Schematic Diagram

2.1.4. Specific Test Certificate
In particular, the safety gears (such as instantaneous or progressive), lock mechanisms for
step doors, padding, and protection against over-acceleration during up strokes are all
dependent on the Lift's record of tests and certifications. It's crucial to confirm that these
parts have undergone rigorous testing and have received certification from the companies
that produce the Lift's key components. To guarantee the safety and dependability of the
Lift, it is essential to have a thorough record of tests and certifications because to the
unique nature of fire apparatus.

2.2. Lift Test before Entering Services.

Before being accepted into operation, every Lift must be examined and approved by TA
supervised authority or a third-party company. The following elements must be
specifically covered in each of the two categories by these tests.

2.2.1. Checking
✓ Matching the installations with the initial license documents.
✓ Eye testing to check the base of construction is up to the code.

2.2.2. Experiment and Verification

The following should be covered by these tests:
✓ Components and accessories for suspension.
✓ Safety equipment: safety equipment needs to pass testing
with the lift at maximum weight and 1.25 of the rated
speed.
✓ Measuring electric current, power, and velocity;
separating electric resistance; and grounding all metal
components.
✓ A mechanical technique for halting and pivoting the Figure 4 Tests of Elevator

3. Periodic Test for Elevators
Periodic trials and tests are carried out on elevators after entering the Service to prove that
it is in good condition and these periodic trials and tests should not be more strict pre-
service requirements and excessive consumption or stresses can reduce their recurrence
From the safety of the elevator and this situation appears especially when experimenting
with components such as the safety brake assembly (parachute) and dampers as well
When conducting after-service tests on these components must be taken into account that
the ascent is empty and the speed is reduced, knowing that it has been checked the
efficiency of these components during qualitative testing, and the safety of their
composition and performance in tests conducted before the elevator enters service and
these components are always in good working order during periodic tests on the elevator.

3.1. Test Devices

✓ Locking Devices.
✓ Ropes.
✓ Mechanical Braking.
When a failure occurs in one of the two identical groups of mechanical braking and the
inability of the other part when the lift is stopped, a detailed inspection of the brake drum,
axles and levers must be carried out.
✓ A - Speed Regulator Device.
✓ B - Safety Brake Assembly (Parachute).

4. Tests and Experiments after Radical Modification

To guarantee that the elevators comply with the requirements of this code, experiments
and tests should be conducted after changes and extensive overhauls or repairs made in
the wake of an accident. These experiments and tests should be conducted as follows:
The following must be considered while recording radical modifications and accidents in
the technical section of the log or file:
✓ Modifying rated speed
✓ Modifying the maximum load
✓ Modify the ascendant's mass.
✓ Modifying the path.
✓ Modify the locking mechanisms' Model.
Replace any of the following:
✓ Elevator operating control system.
✓ Movement or its type's indications.
✓ Doors' design (or the addition of one or more doors to the lintel doors or the
ascending door).
✓ The apparatus or traction hoop.
✓ A device for controlling speed and damping.
✓ The safety brake system (parachute).
✓ The measures of defense against quickening the pace of rise in the upward direction.

Before the elevator is put into service, the competent authorities performing experiments
and testing must receive documentation for the necessary adjustments and specifics. This
authority determines whether it is advised to undertake experiments on the components
that need to be altered or replaced.

5. Control equipment and electrical connection

It is important to ensure proper connection and secure fastening of the main distribution
board, main breaker, main distribution panel, control board, wire ducts, and electrical
connections. Additionally, control devices such as operation panels must be firmly
attached to prevent any movement. The switches and relays on the operation panels
should also be in good working condition. Finally, the insulation resistance values should
match the table and be appropriate for the specific situation.
Minimum resistance Insulation Circuit Voltage Circuit Type
(MΩ) (V)
0.2 V≤300 Main Motor Circuit
0.4 V>300
0.1 V≤150 Control Circuit
0.2 V>150 Signal Circle
V<300 Lighting Circle
Figure 5 Resistance to Insulation in various Circuits

5.1. Machine, Motor Assembly, Alternator, and Braking.

✓ The machine, motor assembly, and alternator need to be installed properly with the
right sound and vibration isolation. additional safeguards to prevent slipping or falling
are included.
✓ The brake system needs to be properly fixed so that it can slow down and stop when
the power goes out.
✓ The traction hoop and steering hoop must be free of cracks and properly placed.

5.2. Loading Tests

The following circumstances should apply while conducting loading tests:
✓ In the uphill direction with no passengers in the elevator
✓ In the downward direction with no passengers in the elevator
✓ In either direction with a rated load

5.3. Overspeed Governor Operating Conditions

An accelerometer should be used to measure the regulator's operating speed.

5.4. Safety Brake Operating Conditions

The following is the premise upon which experiments are conducted:
✓ Halt the lift by operating the matching speed regulation while falling.
✓ To show the safety of operation for a safety brake assembly without a speed regulator,
the ropes on the side of the counterweight must be loosened during lifting.

7|Page
5.5. Examinations Performed inside the Elevator.
✓ A sign stating the kind of usage of the elevator, the rated load, and the capacity must
be erected in a prominent location.
✓ The horizontal gap between the lintel of the elevator floor and the lift well shall not
exceed 15 cm.
✓ The contact switch needs to fit snugly.

5.6. Examinations Performed above the Roof of the Elevator.

✓ Checking the clearance over the building's roof is necessary.
✓ The safety brake must be fastened to and secured to the speed regulator rope.
✓ The door locks ought to be functional.

5.7. Examinations Performed for the Lift Well.

✓ The suitable hole depth must be achieved.
✓ The lower trail end cutters must be firmly secured.
✓ Flexible cables must be shielded from harm and contact with sharp edges.

6. Performing an Experiment
The steps for carrying out the experiment are as follows:
1. To begin with, raise the elevator cabin without any weight until the limit switches.
2. secondly, proceed to the bottom limit switch while using 125% of your rated weight.
While the balancing wights are resting on compression dampers, we must ensure that
the elevator cabin won't rise without wight. We can verify that the balancing wights
are identical to those stated by the manufacturer by measuring the current, speed, and
current of the AC and DC motors.

8|Page
3. An assembly for the elevator cabin's safety brakes (parachute)
Less power is absorbed by the brake system Prior to the elevator going into service,
the experiment's goal and operating safety should be considered. Reviewing the
installation and control resources that the qualitative test validated the security of the
entire assembly, including the installation of the movement guides and safety brake in
the elevator cabin. The test must be done when the elevator is moving downward with
the brakes open and the machine running. Rotate until the ropes give or, in the two
instances listed below,
4. A safety brake assembly damper that acts instantly. The safety brake assembly must
be released at rated speed with the safety load spread uniformly throughout the
elevator cabin.
5. An assembly for a progressive type safety brake. Remove the safety brake assembly at
a lower speed and carry a load that is comparable to 125% of the rated load in the
elevator cabin (Level Adjustment Speed).

6.1. Speed Regulator

It is important to monitor the launch velocity of the velocity regulator in both the uphill
and downward directions. It is necessary to study the procedure for stopping the elevator
moving in both directions.

6.2. Safety Brake Assembly for the Balancing Weight

In the same way that the safety brake assembly for the elevator cabin was tested—without
any weight within the elevator cabin—we must test the counterweight safety brake
assembly dynamically in the absence of a speed regulator. Finally, after the experiment, it
must be confirmed that there are no damages that could impair the elevator's regular
operation. If necessary, the friction-causing components can be altered.

6.3. Provide Qualitative Test Certificate.

The following equipment's qualitative test certificates must be submitted by an
accredited, certified organization in a certified and certified copy (a copy of the certificate
for this purpose).
The following equipment has received approval from each test certificate of specification:
✓ Locking door hardware.
✓ The threshold's gates.
✓ A speed limiter.
✓ Brake assembly for safety (parachute).
✓ Dampers that dissipate energy (or cumulative energy dampers bouncing back).
✓ Electrical safety circuits with electronic components as a means of prevention against
accelerating climb in the upward direction.

9|Page
7. Registry
The main characteristics of an elevator should be recorded in a registry, which should
always be current and contain the following information:
✓ Technical specifications detailing when the elevator first began operating, its ropes,
and whether any accidents occurred.
✓ Another section should contain copies of the tests and examinations and notes on
these tests. The administrators in the maintenance department need access to the
document or file.

8. Maintenance
Elevators should be frequently maintained by a licensed individual in good working
order, along with any attached equipment.

9. Conclusion
This code's objective is to outline the safety regulations governing both electric passenger
elevators and elevators. Whether they are users or those in charge of maintenance,
passengers with cargo must take extra precautions while using elevators in an emergency
to protect their lives and their belongings from the risks of accidents brought on by their
use. No elevator will operate without a licensee, and every maintenance procedure should
be recorded in the registry. Also, for general safety, the elevator should be maintained
periodically and adhere to the code of ethics we previously discussed.
The following are the appropriate elevator handling techniques:
✓ Creating legal documentation.
✓ Every upkeep procedure needs to be recorded in the registry.
✓ Proper equipment must be used for maintenance in order to keep the elevator as safe
as possible.
✓ The elevator will undergo testing to ensure that every component is in good operating
order and is being used safely.
✓ To keep control equipment from shifting, it should be professionally installed and
secured.
We can understand the significance of codes of ethics in general since they clearly define
the requirements for securely installing any technology without endangering humans.
Anyone who attempted to implement rules of ethics in their firm would see how
professionally the enterprise is developing. Although the code of ethics addresses it, many
business owners do not feel the need to remind their staff to uphold the law.
