ENERGY-DEPTH RELATIONSHIP

Total energy head (H) = 𝐙𝐙 + 𝐲𝐲 +
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐
𝑽𝑽𝟐𝟐
Total energy line (TEL) = 𝒁𝒁 + 𝒚𝒚 +
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐
Hydraulic gradient line (HGL) = Z + y
Specific Energy (E)
• The total energy per unit weight excluding the datum energy.

• Total energy head excluding datum head.

• It is used in defining critical depth and analysis of flow problem.

• E~y curve is parabolic.

• One E value at two flow depth due to quadratic equation between E and y
• The two depth for a common specific energy (E) is called Alternate depth. 4

Critical Flow: 𝑽𝑽𝟐𝟐 𝑸𝑸𝟐𝟐

Critical Depth (yc): The flow depth at which the specific energy is minimum
Critical Velocity (vc): The flow velocity at which the specific energy is minimum
5
Dr. R. Swain, Asst. Prof., NIT RKL
Subcritical depth (y2):

The flow depth is called subcritical depth when it

is more than the critical depth (yc) and velocity is
less than critical velocity

At subcritical depth (𝒚𝒚𝟐𝟐 ),

𝒚𝒚𝟐𝟐 > 𝒚𝒚𝒄𝒄 𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚 𝒗𝒗𝟐𝟐 < 𝒗𝒗𝒄𝒄

Supercritical depth (y1):

The flow depth is called supercritical depth when it
is less than the critical depth (yc) and velocity is more
than critical velocity

At supercritical depth (𝒚𝒚𝟐𝟐 ),

𝒚𝒚𝟏𝟏 < 𝒚𝒚𝒄𝒄 𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐚 𝒗𝒗𝟏𝟏 > 𝒗𝒗𝒄𝒄

Froud’s Number (Fr): A dimensionless number which indicate the influence of
gravity on fluid flow in open channel. It is used to express different flow conditions
