ASSIGNMENT-2

APPLIED PHYSICS-II (BS-106)

Q1. (a) Give the postulates of the quantum theory of radiation. Derive Planck’s radiation
formula.
(b). Show that Rayleigh –Jeans Law and Wien’s law are special cases of Planck’s radiation
law.
Q2. (a) What is meant by a distribution function? Write expression of Maxwell-Boltzmann,
Bose-Einstein and Fermi- Dirac distribution functions.
(b). What is Fermi-energy? What is its physical significance?
Q3. (a) What type of statistics shall be applicable for a gas of photon? Justify your answer.
(b). At what temperature can we expect a 10% probability that electrons in a metal will have
an energy which is 1% above EF? the Fermi energy of the metal is 5.5 eV.
Q4. Show that Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac statistics reduces to Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics
at high temperature.
Q5. (a) What is blackbody radiation?
(b). If the filament of a 40 W bulb has an area 2×10-4 m2 and behaves as a perfect blackbody.
find the wavelength corresponding to the maximum in its energy distribution. The Stefan’s
constant is 5.67×10-8 Wm-2K-4 and Wien’s constant is 2.89×10-3 mK.
