FIRST COT VIRTUAL DEMONSTRATION TEACHING
IV- MACAPAGAL (8:50-9:40)

Learning Competency:
Describe some types of harmful interactions among living things. S4LT-IIi-j-18

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
1. Describe some types of harmful interactions among living things.
2. Illustrate some types of harmful interactions among living things.
3. Appreciate relationship with other living things around us.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Types of Harmful Interactions Among Living Things

B. Science Concepts/Ideas:
The ecosystem is made up of interacting organisms (plants, animals and
other living things) and the physical environment which they need in order to
survive.  The relationship between two types of organisms in an ecosystem can be
beneficial, like mutualism or commensalism or it can also be a harmful
relationship.
C. Science Processes:
Observing Identifying, Classifying, Describing, Communicating, Applying
D. Materials:
Power Point Presentation, Google Meet, pictures

us.

III. Learning Tasks:

A. ELICIT- ACTIVATING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE (5 minutes)

Unlocking of Difficulties

Harmful – dangerous

Predator – an animal that lives by killing and eating other animals

Prey – an animal that is hunted or killed by another animal for food

Host – organism that usually benefit from the interaction

Parasite – the one that is affected

Directions: Identify the picture whether it is a mutualism or a commensalism interaction.

Write M if it is a mutualism and C if it is a commensalism.
1. Bee obtaining the nectar of the flowers.

2. Shark and remoras swimming side by side.

3. A boy feeding his dog.

4. Bird’s nest in a tree.

5. Orchids in a tree.

C. EXPLORE (10 minutes)

1. Introduce Lesson: Harmful Interactions Among Living Things

2. Ask: How do living things such as bird and worm, lions and buffalos, aphids and rose
plant interact with one another?
3. Lead the class in discussing the Science concepts.
Interactions among living things in the ecosystem are not always beneficial to the
organism involved in the ecological relationship.  In order to survive, some organisms
are into harmful interactions with others.  In a harmful interaction, one organism
benefits in the relationship while the other is harmed or is eaten.  There are also
situations where both participating organisms get harmed in the relationship. Harmful
interactions in an ecosystem can be competition, parasitism or predation.

D. EXPLAIN (10 minutes)

Lead the class in explaining some types of harmful interaction among living things.

Predation-one organism is benefited while the other is badly affected (killed or

eaten). The organisms in the relationship are the following:
Predator-the organism that benefits in the relationship.
Prey-the organism that is eaten or killed.
Example: bird eating worms
Parasitism – the organisms that usually benefit from this interaction are called the
parasites and the one that is affected is called the host. The parasites could be internal
or external. The internal parasites are those found inside the body of a host like the
ascaris in the human stomach. The external parasites are those found outside the body
of the host like the aphids and the tick in a dog’s body. Parasites cannot live alone.
They must live in a living host. Some parasites do slight harm to their host. Others
can kill their host.
Competition- is striving between organisms for the things needed for survival.
Organism may compete for food, shelter, sunshine space, water, and other things
needed for survival. Every organism in this kind of relationship is a competitor.

Example: Lions and buffalos.

1. In the relationship between the hawk and the chick, the hawk is
     considered as the prey.

2. Competition is an ecological relationship wherein two or more organisms compete for

common resources such as food, water, shelter, and sunlight in order to live.

3. The organism which is being eaten is called a prey.

4. The relationship where one is harmed and the other is benefited is
called parasitism.

5. Predator is the animal that eats the prey.

GENERALIZATION

Directions: Express your understanding of the lesson in this module by supplying the blanks with
a word to complete the paragraph. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Competition Parasitism predation predator survival
