PROJECT NAME: Trivia Nights Kabacan – USM Student Week Intersociety Edition

PROJECT PROPONENTS: Trivia Nights Pinas – Kabacan & University Student Government
VENUE: USM Commercial Building
DATE AND TIME: April 25, 2023; Time(To be announced)

BACKGROUND:

Trivia Nights Pinas (or Trivia Pinas) is an event organizing and marketing outfit that
conceptualize trivia games. It started its trivia games in Davao City and has operations in
places like Davao City, Digos City, Agusan del Sur, Metro Manila and Cebu City.

Trivia Nights Pinas is a brand, with creative mechanics that delineate the games from
being just mere “quiz bowls”. The manner of questioning often digresses from a mere
identification or multiple choice but includes twists of mental exercises such as Venn
diagrams, anagrams, arithmetics, fill in the blanks and more. It is also interactive as it
includes audio and visual categories where participants are asked to decipher the answers
based on sounds or photographs.

A regular trivia night has categories anything under the sun - from business, TV
shows, geography, history, pop culture, music, mathematics, linguistics, movies, current
events or even showbiz. It is completely random and it could cover literally everything with
a notion that every kind of knowledge is acceptable and must be celebrated. It is a team
competition, where team members of a team works with each other to complement the
group based on their strengths. It is ideal in a team that members have varying interests –
there is a film guy, a geography guy, a music guy, a history guy or a “marites” guy
depending on a team’s strategy.

The trivia games of Trivia Nights Pinas was first introduced in Kabacan, North
Cotabato on January 12, 2023. The proponents partnered with Boknoy’s Restaubar to
institutionalize its own brand – “Thursday Fun @ Kabacan”. It was a passion project,
strategizing that Kabacan is in the heart of North Cotabato and is a University Town
housing the premier state university in Cotabato province – USM. The proponents’ purpose
in introducing the games to Kabacan is to create an opportunity for students and other

persons in the locality to unwind from studies or work through a once a week trivia game
indulgence. The game has no registration fee and no minimum consumable required and is
sustained by a passionate volunteer core group who allocates their time and energy to
organize the games. It has provided a staple activity for people who wants to compete,
socialize and be active during Thursdays in Kabacan.

RATIONALE:

The rationale for the USM STUDENT WEEK INTERSOCIETY EDITION is to organize an
activity during the Student Week with the Trivia Pinas format. It is our utmost belief that
the activity is beneficial for students of USM as:

1. Trivia games promote knowledge and rational thinking;

2. It encourages the habit of fact-checking and precision of information;
3. It builds a community of likeminded people with a shared special interest;
4. It creates an environment of recreation and fair competition and
5. It fosters teamwork upon society/organization members.

It is also a worthwhile advocacy of the Department of Public Information, Executive

Department of the University Student Government. As previously stated, trivia games
promote knowledge and rational thinking – facets which are important in the academe. The
quality of students retaining and processing information should not be understated.
Ignorance plays a grandiose role in misinformation and conflict. These two aforementioned
are key issues in our society which may be mitigated by encouraging fact-checking and
rational thinking.
