C. REASON.
- To compensate the lake of current gain of transistor Q13 fitted on protective
printed circuit board (PCB), in order to match the pulse time delay of 45 ms ± 10
ms during reset.

D. DESCRIPTION.
1) Modification of PCB
If the current gain of transistor Q13 is less than 85, the reset on pin G does not allow
to obtain a pulse with a time delay of 45 ms ± 10 ms.
With a capacitor C15 of 22 µF and a resistor R52 of 2.15 KΩ, the characteristic of
slope is very step and sensible to variation in temperature: the current gain of
transistor Q13 can be cut by half at – 55 °C.
In order to obtain a pulse of 45 ms ± 10 ms without variation during reset, whatever
the temperature; a gentle slope shall be used.
By using a capacitor C15 of 47 µF a resistor R52 of 400 Ω, the slope becomes more
gentle than before, therefore the time delay becomes less dependant of current gain
transistor and the temperature variation.
On protective PCB P/N P604666-1 capacitor C15 was 22 µF ± 20% 50 V CTS13
becomes 47 µF ± 20% 63 V CTS21E and resistor R52 was 2.15 KΩ ± 1% RS71Y
becomes adjustable resistor RS71Y typical value 402 Ω ± 1%.
Protective PCB P/N P604666-1 issue D becomes P604666-1 issue E.

E. APPROVAL.

A. General
The sofid-state protection regulator is connected to the aircraft system starter-generator and
,operates in two different ways depending on whethar the generator function or the starter
function is concemed.
In the firçt case, the protection regulator keeps the generator output voltage constant in
spite of load or speed variations by causing a p w r transistor to chop the field cumnt at a
frequency determined by the starter-generator characteridics.
During the starting sequence, the protection regulator maintains a constant starting current
input by graduafly reducing starter field current to lengthen the starter-generator service life.
A lower field current lima is however fixed to grevent starter-generator from running away off
load.

(1) Regulator function

(a) Generator output voltage regulation

- Voltage sansing circuit
The voîtage sensing circuit comprises the chain of resistors R13, R14, P l , R72,
R I 1, R32 and a smoothing capacitor C8. The chain is connected to the regulation
point through contact F and reflects the generator output voltage. The position of
the slider of variable resistor P i determines a voltage which is applied to input 2 of
integrated circuit H l .
Voltage adjust variable resistor P l is associated with the voltage sensing circuit to
set the generator output voltage between 25 and 30 V.
A voltage lirniting circuit, composed of R9 and CRIO, is associaied with the sensing
circuit for the purpose of palliating the serious overvoltage hazard resufting from an
inadvertently broken conneetion between contact F and the regulation point.
Should this happen, tbis circuit limrts the voltage rise to 3 V above the preset value.
- Reference circuit
The voltage applied to input 3 of integrated circuit H l is the temperature-
compensated reference voltage ( h m 6 to 7 V) which is continuously compared
with the sensed voltage.
A stabilised + 20 V voitage is supplied through RIO to CRi4, CR21 from which the
referenee voltage is tapped.

The comparator circuit consists to integrated circuit Hi which continuously

compares sensing circuit output voltage V2, applied to input 2, with reference
voltage V3, applied to input 3.
If V6 = output voltage from integrated circuit Hl :

-
NOTE : Output 6 of amplifier H l changes state for a very small difference behnreen
V2 and V3, of the order of a few rnillivok.
- Field conbol circuit and power circuit
Before field-effect transistor (FET) Q4 fires, its behaves like a low-value resistor.(of
about 50 il)as gate G and source S are at the sarne potential.

Conductive Qg grounds the gate of Q4 to reduce the starter field current so as to keep
the voltage at contact D, and subsequently the current draw, at a constant value.
The field current has however a lower limit to prevent the off-loaded generator from
accidentally ninning away as a result of a failure that may occur during the starting
sequence.
For this purpose, the starting current holding circuit is designed so that the apparent
resistance of the power circuit (contacts A and R-S) is never less than 20 82 to prevent
the generator from reaching a hamifui running speed.
The minimum field current value is obtained from signal (+), held on contact C during
the starting sequence and transmitted by CR17 and R22, which causes transistor Q I to
conduct, thereby connecting resistor Rf to contacts A and R-S.

(3) Protection function

(a) Overvoltage protection

The purpose of this function is to cut off the field current supply to the generator
responsible for the overvoltage condition and to isolate it from the system by
opening its associated reverse current relay.
The overvottage sensing circuit is preset to between 31.5 and 31.8 V and it
operates by energizing relay REX through SCR Q I 4 to cut off the power suppty to
contact A, thereby opening the reverse current relay of the faulty generator.
The power supply to contact K-L is slmultaneous!y cut off, thereby removing the
field current supply from the faulty generator.
The overvoltage protection circuit operation is delayed as follows :
- 32 V ovenroltage : 1 to 3 sec. time delay
- 35 V ovenroltage : 0.25 to 1.5 sec. time delay
-45 V overvoltage : 0.04 to 0.45 sec. time delay
- 80 V ovenroltage ; 0.015 to 0.08 sec. time delay
In case of malfundion as the generators are paraIlel-connected, the ovetvottage
sensing circuit of the less loaded generator is prevented from operating by a
compamtive measurement of the voltage across the balancing windings of each
generator.

(b) Rearming of relay REX

A signal (+) is applied ta contact G and generates through QI3 and semioonductor
diode CR31 and diode CR46 a pulse which rearms relay RU( and is applied to
contact K-L through semiconductor diode CR32 and resistor R57 to strengthen thé
residual magnetism of the grnerator for the purpose of facilitating' its cut-in if
necessary.
