Elastic design is carried out by assuming that the design load structures behave in a linearly elastic

manner

Pastic design is a methodology by which structural elements are selected considering the system’s
overall ultimate capacity. For safety, the applied loads are increased by load factors dictated by
appropriate cods. This design is based on the yield property of the steel.

1. Determine the Shape Factor and the

Plastic moment of the figure shown.

Use Fy = 248 MPa

2. Determine the plastic section Modulus of the

Figure shown:
A = 200(40) + 250(50) = 20,200 mm2
A1 =A2 ½ A = 10,250 mm2
A2 = 50y = 10,250 mm2
y= 205 mm
Zx= ∑Ay =200(40)(45+20) +50(45)(45/2)

+ 50(205)(205/2)= 1621.25 x 103 mm3

3 Determine the plastic section modulus
of the figure shown.

C =T
AcFy =AtFy ; Ac = At
Ac + At =A
Ac = ½ A
A1= 237(18) =4266 mm2
A2= 280(13) =3640 mm2
A3= 137(15) =2055 mm2
A = A1 + A2 + A3 = 9961 mm2
Ac = ½ A ; Ac = ½ (9961) = 4980.5 mm2

4266 + yp (13) =4980.5

yp = 54.962 mm
Zx= ∑Ay =4266(54.962 -9) +54.962 (13)( 54.962 /2)

+ 225.038(13)( 225.038/2 )+ 2055( 217.538 )= = 991.92 x 103 mm3
