Real Life Application of Statistics

● Aim : To acquire knowledge about the application of Mean, Median and Mode in real life.

S
● Hypothesis :
1) The ideal BMI of children in the age group 13-15 should be 18.5-24.9
2) To observe whether the students of our school fall in this category.
3) To suggest/research on the corrective measures to be taken to achieve this BMI.
4) To create general awareness among the students regarding healthy eating habits and maintain a balanced
diet.

H
● Objectives :
1. To study the average BMI of students of Grade 10.
2. To collect data regarding the height and weight of each student and compute the Body Mass Index
(BMI).
LP
3. To analyze the data and study the trends observed in BMI of Grade 10 students. (Age group 13-15).
● Material used : File sheet ,graph paper, scale, pencil, eraser, black ball point pen, colour pens, geometrical
instruments.

● Tools : Survey Method

● PROCEDURE :
Compute :
1. Total number of students in the class ___________.
2. Height: ____ meter Weight: ___ kilogram.
3. To calculate the BMI using the formula
𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
BMI = 2
(ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡)
4. The data collected about the BMI of students of a class is to be arranged in the form of class intervals as
follows :
Class 10–15 15 –20 20 –25 25 –30 30 –35 35 –40 40 –45 45 –50

● RESEARCH AND FINDINGS :

S
[A] MEAN
Compute the mean BMI of the class to which the students belongs.

Inference : The mean BMI of class ________ (division) is ___________.

[B] MODE

Use histogram to find mode and observe the class interval (BMI) with highest frequency.

Take scale as 2 cm = 5 units on X axis and 2 cm = 2 units on Y axis :

Class 10–15 15 –20 20 –25 25 –30 30 –35 35 –40 40 –45 45 –50

Inference :
Maximum students have the BMI in the class interval ________.
The mode of the data is _______.

[C] MEDIAN
Construct an ogive (less than frequency)

S
Take scale as 2 cm = 5 units on X axis and 2 cm = 5 units on Y axis

Inference : (using Ogive)

1. Median BMI
2. Number of students whose BMI is below 18.5
3.
4.
5.H Number of students whose BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9
Number of students whose BMI is between 25 and 29.9
Number of students whose BMI is higher than 30

[D] PIE CHART :

According to my BMI, I am classified as ___________ (underweight /normal /overweight /obese)

LP
BMI Reference Chart :

BMI Classification
˂ 18.5 Under weight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal
25 – 29.9 Over weight
˃ 30 Obese

To construct a pie chart depicting the diet plan to be followed by a student (using individual data) which
will help provide an ideal BMI range. (include percentage of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibers and other
nutrients to be included in the diet according to your own BMI)

The pie chart is a pictorial representation of data relative to a whole.

Various observations of the data are represented by the sectors of the circle.
The angle formed at the center is 360°.
Steps for construction of Pie Chart for a given data:

● Find the central angle for each nutrient using the formula :

𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑁𝑢𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡
Central Angle = 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 × 360 = 100
× 360

(The value of nutrients to be selected as per the BMI value after research)

● Draw a circle of any radius.

● Draw a horizontal radius.

S
● Starting with the horizontal radius, draw radii, making central angles corresponding to the values of
respective nutrients.
● Repeat the process for all the nutrients required in your diet.
● These radii divide the whole circle into various sectors.
● Now, shade the sectors with different colors to denote various components.

H● Thus, we obtain the required pie chart.

As represented in the pie chart, I must include more __________ in my diet which will
