INTRODUCTION

This module intends to introduce essential concepts in the

conduct of an inquiry, investigation, and immersion to senior high school
students. The conduct of an inquiry requires that it be done in a scientific
manner and in a highly objective atmosphere. Moreover, the success of
an inquiry will rest on your ability to identify a research problem, to
strategize how to approach such problem, and to communicate the
outcome of the investigation. As such, you will initially be introduced to
the underlying concepts and principles associated with an investigation
as presented in Lesson 1. Toward the end of this lesson, you will have a
deeper appreciation of the role and importance of an inquiry in economic
progress and technological advancement, in the formulation of national
policies and law, in the protection and preservation of the environment,
and in the uploading of the welfare and safety of mankind.

This will also serve as a reference material about results- based

management (RBM). Though this is not the universally accepted tool to
effectively manage a research program, RBM has been adopted by
several governments including research funding institutions to be able to
effectively monitor and manage various programs implemented across
several nations.

To ensure the integrity and reliability of the inquiry, Lesson 3

presents certain principles associated with some research norms as well
as those generally perceived as “research misconduct”. It is therefore,
essential that a researcher observe certain ethical practices in conducting
research projects.

Lesson 4 covers technique in preparing an effective review of

related literature. This is one of the most critical stages in an inquiry
especially when applying for a research grant. The novelty of the
expected output is effortlessly emphasized when an effective review of
related literature is prepared. Lesson 5 shall test the extent of your
understanding of the basic concepts of inquiry or investigation. The
culminating activity will involve the preparation of a research proposal.

A research is important undertaking as it presents new

knowledge and technology essential in solving a wide range of problems.
The success of any inquiry or research eventually contributes to
economic progress and advances in technology. As the saying goes, “All
life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better”.
Hence, in Lesson 6, you will execute planned research activities to
generate target output. Lesson 7, on the other hand, deals with the
processing of experimental data and, consequently, extracting
information. You will be introduced to some important statistical
methods useful in testing your hypotheses. Lesson 8 and 9 cover basic
guidelines in relation to communicating the results of your inquiry. The
culmination of the research process as illustrated in Lesson 1 is
publicizing the outcome of the inquiry. A truly remarkable and
outstanding scientific contributions should withstand constructive and
meticulous evaluation by the scientific community prior to the
acceptability of that new knowledge or new technology into the social
mainstream.

This module consists of 4 lessons wherein each lesson

is developed through the following phases:

IMMERSIONS
 MOTIVATE – provides an overview of what you should understand in the
lesson. This includes clear directions and purpose of the lesson. This
also states the expectations in line with what you should know,
understand, and be able to do, produce, or perform to show there is transfer
of learning. It activates your prior knowledge and prepares you
for higher level tasks.

 ORGANIZE – presents the main reading or literary text and the

activities/ tasks that lead you to acquire knowledge, make sense
of, and construct meaning out of the information and experiences
contained therein.

 VALIDATE - includes activities that will expand, enrich, enhance,

and broaden your understanding of the target concepts and
skills. It also presents the real life-based product or performance task as
final output for the lesson that serves as evidence of understanding of
the target concepts and skills.
This is an enabling task for the main real life-based product or
performance task covering the entire module.

 ENGAGE – enables you to express your insights, learning, and

realization on the lesson. This part contains prompts and other
organizers that will help you sum up and synthesize what you have
learned.

This module will equip you with the basic concepts associated
with the performance of a scientific investigation. Careful and diligent
planning must always be undertaken to ensure the success of any
research endeavor. The research process was discussed in detail for you
to follow through and to recognize the various facets of a scientific
inquiry, More than the skills and knowledge pertinent to the conduct of a
scientific inquiry, you must be able to imbibe upon yourself the ethical
principles germane to research such that you will not commit any
research misconduct in the course of doing research. Research is
regarded as an academic and highly scholarly pursuit; its results must be
credible, valid, reliable, and transferable.

One’s creativity refers to his or her ability to explore everything
within and beyond the realms of the mind. And the freedom to
express that creativity, if not curtailed, could bring about an
unimaginable impact, the magnitude of which could be gauged with
the application of such technological advancements or information or
other creative outputs.

An inquiry is carried out systematically to bring about new

ideas, concepts, technologies, and products for practical
applications. An inquiry entails five major elements as illustrated
below. Research emanates from a simple situation, a hypothesis, a
problem, or a mere observation that requires factual answer. The
driving force to doing any research undertaking involves generation
of new information and a plausible information. These basically
would lead you to ask why, when, who, what, where, and how.

INQUIRY

Each step must be embarked upon to ensure that the new

information or the solution being presented has integrity and is
trustworthy. A research problem lacking a good foundation, a poorly
planned research framework, the use of outdated methods and
techniques and invalidated research data, or the absence of a
research report will nullify the inquiry of investigation.

Research could:
 Provide solutions to problems through new,
technological applications an developments, or

Northeastern Mindanao Academy “The School that Trains for Life”| INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATIONS, AND
IMMERSIONS
 Validate a hypothesis or a theory which leads to an
increase in knowledge and to development.

These purposes are embodied in the two types of research.

The first purpose pertains to applied research while the latter
refers to basic research.

 Applied Research usually leads to new products or

new technologies that can later on be
commercialized and adopted wisely.
 Basic Research may provide sufficient evidence to
prove a certain concept or principle under
investigation, resulting in new knowledge or
validate theories.

An inquiry may be undertaken by either an individual or

a group of individuals with varying expertise and working for a
collaborative research goal. A collaborative, multidisciplinary
system has been preferred owing to two factors: diffusion of
scientific capacity and interconnection among researchers
(Caroline S. Wager, 2005)

Process of Scientific Investigation

1. Formulating research questions

 The first step in the process is to pose a research
question. A specific research problem has to be
addressed. You may identify a research problem by
going over specific situations. This part, called
background of the study, presents specific problems
requiring solutions. These may involve hypothetical
situations or possible circumstances but may have
generated incomplete information. That by doing an
inquiry you will be able to bridge the information gap.
But as a researcher, you must also be aware that a
research undertaking has its limitations. Therefore,
before performing any research work, you have to
define its scope.

2. Review of related literature

 This refers to studies, inquiries, investigations, and
research work undertaken by other researchers in line
with the field of study that your research problem may
be classified into. Sources of literature may include
journal articles, books, reprints, newspapers, websites,
results of surveys and interviews and the like.

3. Formulate hypothesis
 The hypothesis could be a possible solution to your
research problem. However, a hypothesis has to go
through a series of investigations before it is validated
and accepted. It must undergo all types of scrutiny to
verify whether it is fact or fallacy. And this is done via
data-gathering activities such as experimentation,
surveys, interviews, and other modes of collecting data.
The manner by which the data are gathered is very
important; therefore, ten choice of methods is also
critical in any injury.

4. Processing of data
 Raw data mean nothing and so, it is also your
responsibility to process them as to extract any
patterns or trends. Processing of data entails the use of
statistical treatment. Statistical methods such as t-test

Northeastern Mindanao Academy “The School that Trains for Life”| INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATIONS, AND
IMMERSIONS
and F-test are used to test your hypothesis. The
parametric test and nonparametric test can also be
done to reach a conclusion on the reasonableness of
your hypothesis. Processed data are solid evidence
that could be used to draw conclusions. These present
a more profound and solid basis for explaining your
results rather than relying on your own biases.

5. Communicating the results

 Any inquiry if not communicated to the public is useless.
You, as a researcher, must assume the responsibility
of conveying the outcome of your inquiry.
Communicating the outcome of your research serves
the following purposes:
1. Acknowledgment of support from funding
institutions
2. Documented contribution to knowledge and
development in a given field of study
3. Eliciting prompt feedback, both negative and
positive. In that way, the legitimacy of the whole
process is not affirmed by you or a group of
researchers only, but many other people who
could also provide meaningful insights and
comments about the recently concluded
research study.

Open-mindedness, critical thinking, and problem-solving

ability are just few personal traits necessary in conducting an
inquiry, investigation, or immersion. This is because an
inquiry, investigation, or immersion must at all times be
conducted in a highly specific manner. The scientific process
typically entails the following steps:
1. Formulating a hypothesis
2. Devising a set of logical strategies
3. Applying suitable standard methodologies to obtain
raw data
4. Processing of data synthesize novel information
5. Communicating novel information to target recipients
or beneficiaries.

Following a scientific process yields reliable and validated

results in the form or new information, new technology, or
new process. Accordingly, these advances could bring about
significant changes to society. Generally, an inquiry,
investigation, or immersion covers a wide array of fields,
even transcending those seemingly mind-boggling real-life
challenges.
