CPAS-3000 Data Loader OVERVIEW
Data Loading Software For Windows Introduction

OVERVIEW

INTRODUCTION
The Collins Portable Access Software (CPAS) Data Loader is a
software application that provides external media upload and download
capabilities to Ethernet based Line Replaceable Units (LRU), like
Rockwell Collins’ File Server Unit (FSU). The FSU provides the added
capability to allow uploads and downloads to other LRUs, like the Flight
Management Computer (FMC) and Maintenance Diagnostic Computer
(MDC), which are attached to the FSU. The CPAS Data Loader is
designed for use on a standard Windows-based PC with Ethernet
capability.
Overview of File Server Unit (FSU)
The FSU is part of Rockwell Collins’ Pro Line 21 Continuum architecture
that provides an advanced, highly integrated cockpit environment.
The FSU provides the storage and processing platform for advanced
features, like electronic airport and procedure charts, up-linked
graphical weather and enhanced map overlays.
The FSU provides data load connectivity to other Rockwell Collins’ Pro
Line 21 and Pro Line 4 LRUs, like the FMC, the MDC and Aeronautical
Radio, Inc (ARINC) 429 based LRUs. These LRUs are loaded over
the same Ethernet connection that is used to load the FSU. Thus, the
CPAS-3000 supports loading of all (aircraft loadable) LRUs using the
same user interface and a single Ethernet connection, while relieving
the operator of having to understand what data load type corresponds
to what LRU.
Overview of Data Load Types
The CPAS-3000 automatically manages the type of data loads and
only provides a list of data and software loads that are appropriate for
the selected target or LRU. This alleviates the operator from having to
understand and manage the different data load types. The following
paragraphs provide an overview of the various data load types that
CPAS supports.
The CPAS supports ARINC 615A loads for Ethernet based LRUs,
like the FSU. ARINC 615A loads must be formatted per ARINC 665
standards. The CPAS does not support ARINC 615A download
capabilities.

2nd Edition
6 Jun 08 2-1
OVERVIEW CPAS-3000 Data Loader
Introduction Data Loading Software For Windows

When connected to the FSU, the CPAS also supports ARINC 615-3
loads for ARINC 429 based LRUs and Rockwell Collins proprietary
RS-422 DBU (Data Base Unit) based loads to the FMC and MDC. The
CPAS does not support ARINC 615-3 download capabilities.
The CPAS supports two types of RS-422 DBU based loads, normal
DBU mode and enhanced DBU mode. Normal DBU mode functions
similar to a normal DBU – once the data load has been started on the
CPAS, the operator must then initiate the actual upload or download
operation through the appropriate FMC or MDC interface. In enhanced
DBU mode, the CPAS can initiate the actual upload or download,
thereby bypassing any required interaction through the FMC or MDC
interface. If a FMC or MDC does not support enhanced DBU mode,
CPAS will revert back to normal DBU mode, which is supported by all
FMCs and MDCs. CPAS will prompt the operator (through a message
in the status window) when FMC or MDC interaction is necessary.
On some aircraft that contain an Avionics System Local Area Network
(LAN), the CPAS also supports ARINC 615-3 loads for ARINC 429
based LRUs over the Avionics System LAN. On these aircraft, the
ARINC 429 based LRUs are connected to a data load switch attached
to an Input/Output Concentrator (IOC) that is connected to the Avionics
System LAN.

CPAS-3000 Data Loader SELECTING PC NETWORK ADAPTER
Data Loading Software For Windows Introduction

SELECTING PC NETWORK ADAPTER

INTRODUCTION
For the Data Loader to properly communicate with the FSU or other
Ethernet based LRUs, the Internet Protocol (IP) address, subnet
mask, MTU size, connection speed, and duplex mode of the Ethernet
network connection must be properly configured. The Data Loader will
automatically configure the network adapter on application startup and
restore the network adapter to its original configuration upon application
exit.
In order to provide this capability, the installation program attempts
to automatically select the Local Area Connection network adapter
and determine the appropriate configuration settings during software
installation. If a Local Area Connection is not detected, the installation
program selects the first available network adapter, excluding Wireless
and 1394 (FireWire) network connections. If multiple Local Area
Connection entries are detected, the user will be prompted to manually
select the PC network adapter and appropriate configuration settings
that will be used by the Data Loader.
NOTE
N
The selected network adapter can be viewed and changed from the
Network tab of the Data Loader advanced configuration settings.
Refer to the Network Tab under the Advanced section of the Data
Loader Configuration Window topic for information on viewing and
changing the network parameters.

PROGRAM LIMITATIONS

CPAS-3000 DATA LOADER LIMITATIONS

The CPAS-3000 Data Loader is designed to transfer data/software,
with the following limitations:
• The CPAS-3000 will not run under the Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows ME, or Windows NT operating system.
• Downloading data/software (from a target/LRU to the Data Loader) is
currently not supported for the 615A and 615-3 data load types.
• Only one upload from a CD-ROM may be performed at a time.
• Multiple loads can be performed simultaneously, but only a single
load can be performed for a given target (e.g., can load the navigation
database into all FMCs at the same time but cannot load both the
Charts and Enhanced Maps databases into the FSU at the same
time).
• The FSU and the LRUs attached to the FSU (i.e., FMCs, MDC
and 429-based LRUs) cannot be loaded simultaneously. Although
loads for the FSU and the LRUs attached to the FSU can be started
simultaneously, they will be loaded serially.
• The CPAS-3000 will store only one pilot route file, one disk route
file and one pilot waypoint file for each FMC. The CPAS-3000 will
store only one checklist file and one test and rigging file for the MDC.
CPAS will overwrite any of these downloaded files that may already
be stored in the \DBU\Output directory.
• Importing Navigation databases from floppy disk is not supported.
If a Navigation database is contained on floppy disks, it should be
ordered on a larger media type (e.g., CD-ROM) or electronically.
• Importing data/software with individual files split across media
members (floppy disk, CD-ROM, etc.) is not supported. If a file does
not fit on a single media member (e.g., floppy disk), it should be
ordered on a larger media type (e.g., CD-ROM) or electronically.
• If the user does not have sufficient rights to modify the network
parameters and enable/disable the network adapter (e.g.,
administrator rights), then the PC will require a reboot at startup and
exit of the CPAS-3000 Data Loader program.

loading via the Ethernet network. In order to generate this list, an
Acquire/Refresh Targets query must be sent by the CPAS. This list is
then generated using the type name and position of all targets that reply
to this query command. When one or more targets reply to this query
command, the drop-down portion of the drop-down box is automatically
displayed. The Acquire/Refresh Targets query can be sent automatically
when CPAS is started, or manually through the ACQUIRE/REFRESH

target, or list no compatible targets in the data/software item’s header
files to be displayed. This menu option remains grayed (disabled) until
a 615A target has been selected and defaults to checked.
By default, the data/software items shown are ordered alphabetically by
part number/name. Alternatively, the items can be ordered by creation

text Error will be displayed. When ARINC 665 formatted or Navigation
Data/software items are imported, the integrity of the files associated
with the data/software item is checked to verify that each file is valid.
If an integrity check fails, an error message will be displayed in a
separate window listing the file that failed the check and the reason for
the failure. Refer to the Data/Software Fails an Integrity Check section
under the Troubleshooting topic for information on how to handle a
failed integrity check.
When all data/software item imports have either successfully completed
or failed due to an error, the CLOSE button will be enabled. Click on
CLOSE to close the window.
NOTE
N
If importing 615-3 compatible data/software that is not in the ARINC
665 defined format, a prompt will appear allowing a name to be
specified for the data/software. A suggested name will be displayed
based on the location of the data/software. The specified name will
be used to identify the imported data/software item.

The imported data/software item is stored as a subdirectory within the

data load type directory (i.e., \615A, \6153, or \DBU). The data load
type directories are located in a \Loadsets directory stored in the same
directory as the application executable. If the default installation path is
used, the loadset directory path would be C:\Program Files\Rockwell
Collins\CPAS-3000\Loadsets.
The name of the directory storing the imported data/software files
depends on the data load type. 615A and 615-3 data/software
directories are named after the data/software item part number, and
DBU data/software is stored in sequential directories \0.dbd, \1.dbd,
etc., in a directory named after the database type (e.g., \Navdb,
\Routes, \Perfdb, \Vspddb, \MDCData, or \Output).

• LOG FILE DIRECTORY: Contains the directory where the log file for
the Data Loader application session is written. A log file is created for
the session when either a data load or target information request is
initially performed. The default directory for log files is C:\CPAS\Logs.
This location can be changed by entering a directory name in the
LOG FILE DIRECTORY box or by clicking on the BROWSE button
and selecting an alternative directory location. If the directory
entered did not previously exist, a message box will be presented
upon exiting the DATA LOADER CONFIGURATION window, asking
whether or not the directory should be created. Click YES to create
the directory and exit, or NO to return to the configuration window.
• LOG DETAILED LOAD INFORMATION: This box determines the
level of detail of the information logged during a load. When checked,
detailed information is logged. When not checked, only basic load
information is logged. This box is not checked by default.
NOTE
N
Beware! Logging of detailed load information may dramatically
slow down a dataload and in some cases prevent the load from
completing successfully.

• DELETE LOG FILES OLDER THAN: This box determines whether

or not log files located in the log file directory that are older than the
amount of days specified should be deleted. When checked, deletion
of the old log files occurs on application startup. The number of days
must be between 1 and 365, and the default number of days is 60.
The DELETE LOG FILES OLDER THAN box is checked by default.

NOTE
N
The Refresh Targets timeout value is only applicable if the

box is checked on the DATA LOADER CONFIGURATION window.

• WAIT TIME FOR PORT CONNECTION (SEC): This value specifies

the amount of time, in addition to the FSU-specified reboot wait time,
that the Data Loader should attempt to connect to the FSU ports
listed in this tab. The default wait time is 30 seconds.
NOTE
N
The FSU port connections are only established when the
AUTOMATICALLY INITIATE DATALOAD MODE ON FSU box is
checked on the DATA LOADER CONFIGURATION window and the
FSU target specified by PRIMARY TARGET NAME is first returned
to the Acquire/ Refresh Targets query.

The six port controls allow the port numbers to be specified for each of
the FSU ports. The default values for each are:
• ARINC 615-3 LOW SPEED PORT is 8351
• ARINC 615-3 HIGH SPEED PORT is 8352
• FMC #1 PORT is 8353
• FMC #2 PORT is 8354
• FMC #3 PORT is 8356
• MDC PORT is 8355.
Icons in the PORT CONNECTED column indicate the connection status
of the port in that row. A green circle icon indicates the port is connected
and a red X icon indicates the port is not connected. For example, in the
FSU tab shown in Figure 9-36, the ARINC 615-3 HIGH SPEED PORT
icon indicates that the port is not connected, while the FMC #1 PORT
icon indicates that port is connected.
There will only be one ARINC 615-3 port connected at any one time.
The CPAS will connect the appropriate ARINC 615-3 port based on the
bus speed being used for the data load.
Icons in the LRU RESPONDING column indicate whether or not the
target connected through the port is responding to poll bytes sent by
the Data Loader. A green circle icon indicates the target is responding,
a green circle icon with a black plus sign (+) inscribed in the circle

example, in the FSU tab shown in Figure 9-36, the FMC #1 PORT
icon indicates that the target is responding, while the MDC PORT icon
indicates that the target is responding and supports the enhanced
DBU mode.
NOTE
N
Poll bytes are only sent for the DBU data load type, so the 615-3
port icons for the LRU RESPONDING column display N/A to

Data Loading Software For Windows Introduction

TROUBLESHOOTING

INTRODUCTION
This section provides a few troubleshooting tips for various common
problems.

CPAS-3000 DATA LOADER INSTALLATION

FAILS
Data Loader installation may fail if there is not sufficient hard drive
memory available on the PC. Additionally, if the user has restricted
rights on the system, a failure may occur while attempting to register
application-related COM objects. The user must have administrator
rights to install the CPAS-3000 Data Loader.

INSUFFICIENT HARD DRIVE MEMORY

Exit the installation program. Remove any unnecessary program files
stored on the PC hard drive and uninstall any unused programs using
ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS from the CONTROL PANEL. Run the
CPAS-3000 Data Loader installation program to retry the installation.

UNABLE TO REGISTER THE COM OBJECTS

Exit the installation program. Contact your local system administrator
for further instructions on how to access or obtain an account with
administrator rights.

NO TARGETS AVAILABLE TO UPDATE

If no targets are shown in the SELECT TARGETS/LRU TO BE
UPDATED drop-down box, ensure the FSU and all other LRUs are
operating and are properly linked to the PC through the Ethernet
connections. If any LRUs are attached to the FSU, ensure that
the connectors to the FSU are fully tightened. Also, verify that
the appropriate Ethernet network connection was selected during
installation and that the network connection is properly configured for
the PC. Refer to the Network Tab under the Advanced section of the

Data Loader Configuration Window topic for information on viewing and

changing the network connection parameters.
Disable any internet security software, like firewalls and Virtual Private
Network (VPN) software, that may be running on the PC, as these
programs can block network traffic needed to communicate with the
LRUs. These programs should be re-enabled before connecting the PC
into any internet or office network.
After checking the connections, and disabling all internet security
software, refresh the target list by clicking on the ACQUIRE/REFRESH
TARGETS button. If no targets appear within a few seconds, exit the
CPAS-3000. Wait for at least a minute to allow any attached LRUs
to reboot into normal mode, then restart the CPAS-3000. If the Data
Loader is not configured to refresh targets automatically (refer to the
General section of the Data Loader Configuration Window topic), click
on the ACQUIRE/REFRESH TARGETS button.
If targets still do not appear, uncheck the AUTOMATICALLY REFRESH
TARGETS ON STARTUP box on the DATA LOADER CONFIGURATION
window (refer to the General section of the Data Loader Configuration
Window topic). When prompted upon closing the DATA LOADER
CONFIGURATION window, save the modified settings for all future
Data Loader sessions. Exit the CPAS-3000.
Wait for at least one minute to allow any attached LRUs to reboot
into normal mode, then restart the CPAS-3000. Click on the
ACQUIRE/REFRESH TARGETS button. If targets now appear,
there is a problem with the driver software for the network adapter
that does not allow the AUTOMATICALLY ACQUIRE/REFRESH
TARGETS ON STARTUP feature to work properly. Please contact
the laptop manufacturer or the network adapter manufacturer to see
if a newer version of the driver software for the network adapter
exists. The CPAS-3000 will still function properly except that the
ACQUIRE/REFRESH TARGETS button needs to be manually clicked
every time the CPAS-3000 is started.

TARGET/LRU MISSING FROM THE UPDATE

LIST
If a particular target/LRU is not shown in the SELECT TARGETS/LRU

hardware is operating and is properly linked to the PC through either an

Ethernet connection or the FSU.
If the missing target/LRU is a target attached to the FSU, verify that
the FSU is listed in the SELECT TARGETS/LRU TO BE UDATED
drop-down box. If the FSU is present in the list, open the FSU advanced
configuration settings to view the connection status of the particular
target/LRU port (refer to the Advanced section under the Data Loader
Configuration Window topic for information on accessing the FSU
settings). If the port is not connected, refer to the FSU operator’s
guide for further instructions on how to handle unsuccessful LRU port
connections.
After checking the connections, refresh the target list by clicking on the
ACQUIRE/REFRESH TARGETS button. If the missing target/LRU does
not appear within a few seconds, exit the CPAS-3000 and cycle power
on the missing target/LRU. Wait for at least one minute to allow the
target /LRU to reboot into normal mode, then restart the CPAS-3000
Data Loader.

INSTALLED DATA/SOFTWARE NOT SHOWN

If data/software previously imported (successfully) onto the CPAS-3000
does not appear in the DATA/SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON CPAS list in
the MANAGE DATA/SOFTWARE window, restart the CPAS-3000 and
open the MANAGE DATA/SOFTWARE window. If the data/software
still does not appear in the list, the data/software files may have been
corrupted. If the original data/software files are available, attempt to
import the original data/software files. If the import is also unsuccessful,
refer to the Unable to Import a Data/Software Item section under this
topic.

UNABLE TO IMPORT A DATA/SOFTWARE ITEM

Import problems can occur when a data/software item is not supported
or not recognized by the Data Loader, or when an error occurs during
the import operation.

DATA/SOFTWARE NOT SHOWN

If a data/software item is not shown in the AVAILABLE
DATA/SOFTWARE list in the SELECT DATA/SOFTWARE TO IMPORT
window, importing the data/software item may not be supported. Refer
to the Program Limitations topic for information on what types of
data/software imports are not supported by the CPAS-3000.
If the data/software import is not listed as unsupported, the
data/software item may be corrupted or missing files. Verify that the
data/software files are still valid, restart the CPAS-3000, and retry the
import. If the problem persists, refer to the Support Information topic for
support contact information.

ERROR OCCURRED DURING THE IMPORT

An error can occur while importing a data/software item if the import of
the data/software item is not supported from the media members that
contain it (e.g., multiple disks) or if the data/software item is corrupted
or missing files. If the import of the data/software item is not supported
from the media members that contain it, an error will be displayed
describing the incompatibility. Refer to the Program Limitations topic
for information on what types of data/software imports from media
members are not supported by the CPAS-3000.
If no specific error message is displayed during the import, the
data/software may be corrupted or missing files. Verify that the
data/software files are still valid, restart the CPAS-3000, and retry the
import. If the problem persists, refer to the Support Information topic for
support contact information.
A failed integrity check indicates that one or more of the files in a
data/software item have been corrupted. If an integrity check fails for a
data/software item stored on the hard drive, the data/software should
be removed from CPAS and re-imported from the original media (i.e.,
CD, DVD, USB memory stick, etc.). If the integrity check still fails for the
re-imported data/software item, please obtain an updated (valid) version
of the data/software item. Refer to the Manage Data/Software Window
topic for information on performing the remove and import operations.
If an integrity check fails for a data/software item stored on media other
than the hard drive (i.e., CD, DVD, USB memory stick, etc.), please
obtain an updated (valid) version of the data/software item.
