About the craft

Wood carving is a type of woodworking that requires a skilled hand and an

unobstructed field of vision while using basic carpenter's tools like "cheni" and
"batali." India has a long tradition of wood carving. People of the previous
"Mahanjadaro" civilization were also interested in similar task, but it was mostly
for domestic purposes. Later on, it gradually begins to take on the form of an art
that many individuals turned into a profession in order to support their livelihoods
and continue the work because of its huge demands. Modern wood carving has
now attained a degree of sculpturesque excellence with a blend of traditional
flavour. Numerous locations throughout our nation are experts in these
approaches; Thoruru Village is one such location, special for its wooden craft.

Marketing
i. Organic products
a linseed oil is used to varnish wood that is natural product. wood oils are
deeply absorbed into the wood itself; varnish provides a hard coating.
When compared to varnishing or other protective treatments, applying oil
is occasionally seen as more time-consuming and labour-intensive. It
should be noted that varnish can frequently be applied over specific wood
oils for added protection.

ii. Sustainable Consumption

the use of services and related goods that meet fundamental needs and improve
quality of life while reducing the use of natural resources and harmful materials,
as well as emissions of waste and pollutants over the course of the service or
product, to avoid endangering the needs of future generations. One of wood's
best qualities is that it is a renewable resource with minimal carbon impact and
embodied energy. Comparable products made from other materials require
much more energy to manufacture than products made from wood. Up until the
wood deteriorates or is burned, the carbon in the wood is kept in reserve. The
life of a varnished wood varies between 10 to 20 years, even varnished product
if taken care may last for furthermore years.

iii. Social Marketing

Participation in different social trade gathering is main tool for social marketing,
the firm started participating in trade events across south India states like
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, as well as the
union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry in north India Delhi,
Rajasthan since 2014, and had a big outlet having a good footfall and sales,
Even in the recent Kalakshetra trade event the sales recorded by them was 3.46
lakhs by the closing day.they also sell their products to small scale retailing
chains and to exporting firms.

iv.Rural Marketing
The firms make kitchen cooking equipment and crockery targeting the rural
market, these are low-cost product as they are basically made out of waste
formed during cutting stage of wood, the firm also provide a 3-month internship
to rural children's who wants to learn this art and a means of employment,

Value Chain
value chain (VC) refers to the sequence of activities and processes a business
undertakes to add value to its product or service at every stage from its
inception to delivery. It helps to understand and improve business activities that
create value. This, in turn, increases the value of the final product for the
customers and brings in profit to the business.

excess varnish Finishing After completion of inlay, a varnish coating is given to
provide shine look and preserve the product.

Wage rate

Labour wage remains fixed and is according to the piece rate it sometime varies
according to the design. It takes around 3 months to complete a 5 ft*2 ft wooden
piece, due to this their product price range increases and varies from rupees
1600 to 2.30 lakhs. The cost also depends upon the type of wood.

Product Design
The MPs art and craft makes wall panels , verticals, doors, statues, south Indian
antique colours ,wall mounted brackets , the firm uses sustainability method in
their product the labours involved are given proper working environment and
product design are inspired by gods and goddesses ,animals ,temple structure
,human figure, trees etc., Colour scheme of craft varies as per the design ,
basically monochromatic and dark colours , the brush sizes also varies according
nd iron tools are sourced from
blacksmith and tool are modified according to the design.
Product Manufacturing
This carving technique is easy to explain but difficult to master. It necessitates
intense concentration as well as skilled handwork. Traditionally, family
members learned these skills and techniques from their elders. This craft is done
by both men and women, as well as their children. The duration of the process
varies according to the nature of the products. It is divided into the following
steps:
Step-I
Initially, a block of cylindrical wood is cut to size and left for 2-6 months,
allowing it to absorb both water and light, increasing its vulnerability. It is
known locally as "Season Wood."
Step-II
A piece of wood is then cut into various sizes from a nearby wood mill using
standard tools like a chisel, due, axle, etc. Depending on demand, the size can
range from 2" to 6ft. All of the moisture was drawn out of each cut-off piece of
wood using sunlight. Then, various designs will be scooped out on it. If the
carving is too large, it may be possible to laminate several pieces of wood to
achieve the necessary size. After that, "sand" paper is used to clean and smooth
it out.
Step III
The smoothened block piece is painted, and it takes 3 days to paint a piece.

v. Product Packaging
The product is packed in 3 layer the outer most layer is of wooden sheet,
the 2nd layer is of cardboard sheet and the inner most protective layer is of
dry leaves, newspaper, wooden fillings to provide cushion, that will
protect the product if mishandled. The product inside is covered with a
layer of plastic sheet. the product is packed in such a manner that it's easy
for workers to load and unload it from means of transportation.

vi. Ethical sourcing

The process of ethical sourcing involves making sure that the products
are obtained in a responsible and sustainable manner, that the workers
who make them are safe and treated fairly, and that environmental and
social impacts are taken into account during the sourcing process. MPs
ethical sourcing by using locally available soft woods such as ,
Raktachandan or Red Sanders wood carving, they use hardwood such as
"Gamer," "Mahogany," and "Neem," which are also locally available or

,manpowered rickshaw is used for transportation of raw material to the

factory, firm uses old piece of cloth and natural bristle or bristle-and-
synthetic blend brushes for varnishing and painting the product, the old
clothes are borrowed from nearby households and villages.

vii. Supply Chains to Supply Loops

Retailing
viii. Green Retailing
Green retailing refers to a management approach that seeks to improve
the retail value chain through waste elimination, increased efficiency, and
cost reduction. Green retailing incorporates availability, display and
promotion of green products, sustainability practices in the retail stores,
and ethical business practices. The firm somewhat practice the green
retailing practice by use of LED lights in factory at night shift and at day
maximum use of sunlight is done to lighten up workplace by doing so
they have not even reduced their electricity cost but also reducing their
carbon footprint ,the wood sawdust or short pieces are not burnt rather
used into packaging and if it's of good quality then its further sold to the
concerned retailing chain .

ix. Fair Trade

The firm from its very time has followed fair trade practice, they survive
on 36% margin on their products, their pricing strategy has always been
focused to expand their trade by making their product easily available for
different income sector in society, their product price varies when they
participate in trade fair in different parts of India mainly price vary
because of rent and transportation cost .

x. Extended Chain of responsibility

SUGGESTION
The MPS art and craft follow the sustainability practice up to a limit like as far
as I have observed from their business practices. They use a local varnish for
their product which is harmful and research says use of that varnish may harm
the person using it in long run which is the varnish has a smell that is soothing
but is not good for health, even a child may suffer from health issues in long
run and if a child after touching the product eats something without washing the
hand , he may suffer from digestive issues, which is not good for the firm. The
firm is now working on substitution and that will not have any issue in long run
but will increase firm varnishing cost by 6%.
