Dye Penetrant examination of weld bevels.

2. MATERIAL

Seamless and welded fittings:

• ASTM A 234 WPB


• MSS SP 75 WPHY42 to WPHY60.

3. APPLICABLE CODES

• ASTM E 165
• ASME Section V Art. 6.

4. EXTENSION OF EXAMINATION

100% of all butt weld ends.

5. SURFACE CONDITION

As machined.

6. PRODUCT TO BE USED

• Penetrant: visible MET-L-CHECK VP30 or equivalent;


• Developer: MET-L-CHECK D70 or equivalent.

7. METHOD OF EXAMINATION

Bevels have to be examined in conformity with ASME Section V, Art. 6.

• Precleaning: by brushing or by acetone.


• Piece temperature: from 16°C to 38°C.

PENETRANT

• Method of application: By brushing.


• Dwell time: 20 minutes minimum.
• Removal: Spraying water (water pressure < 50 PSI, water temperature < 38°C).
• Drying: Circulating warm air or by natural ventilation.
• Surface temperature: 50°C maximum.
• Drying period: from 5 to 10 minutes.

DEVELOPER

• Method of application: spraying.


• Interpretation: from 7 to 30 minutes.
• Lighting: natural light or with light (1000 Lux minimum).
• Rinsing: by dematerialized water.

8. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

The following defects are unacceptable:

• Defects extending into the bevel provided the laminations is parallel to the surface and has a
transverse dimension exceeding 6.35 mm.
• All defects not parallel to the surface extending into the bevel.

9. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

All NDE-Personnel shall be qualified in accordance with the Guidelines described in ASNT-TC-1A
Latest Edition (Level II minimum) and in EN-473 (Level II minimum).

10. REPORTING

For all test carried out a written report shall be issued by the Level II Operator and shall include
at least the following information’s:

• Customer/P.O./Project name;
• Description of the part under examination;
• Identification of the part;
• Reference to written procedure;
• Stadium of test;
• Products used and lots numbers;
• Result of the test;
• Name of the Company;
• Date of the test;
• Operator’s name, level and signature.
