Project Title Final Major Project : buckets

Section 1: Review
When starting this course in September 2022, I wanted to work with lots of different people who were
interested in the industry and have a strong love for acting as I do. One main reason for this was that in
GCSE drama I worked really hard with people who just weren’t as enthusiastic as I was. I also wanted
to start the course because I was excited to work with those in the industry and with experience so I can
expand my knowledge of what it is like to work in a professional environment. During this first year, I
have learnt lots of new skills that I will be able to use in the future such as costume design/set design,
how to work in an ensemble, using movement in theatre, devising with and without a stimulus and stage
management skills. At the beginning of the year, I was worried that the people I work with wouldn’t have
the same interests in the industry as me, but after working with everyone, there are lots of people with
different interests in the industry which means we have news skills to bring to the tasks we work on. I
enjoyed working on the vision unit with costume and set design, as they are both disciplines I haven’t
explored much and I am excited to use the skills I leant that term. After this year I have certainly
questioned if I want to just do acting within my career as I enjoy many other elements of the industry,
although acting will still be my biggest interest.

Section 2: Project Concept

The concept for my project is to perform an episodic-style play with elements of
ensemble work. The play we are doing is called “buckets” which was written by Adam
Barnard. The main themes of the play are death, love and time, with featuring topics of
artificial intelligence, fake news, hospitals and families in dire times. As a play, we all
feel that lots of the topics/ scenes are very different from one another and it is difficult to
just pin one theme on the play. On the other hand, it does give us lots of opportunities to
link scenes as there are also no characters or stage directions to the play which gives
us a lot of creative freedom to link some scenes together with the characters we create.
By creating reoccurring characters we will give the audience something to hold onto as
we journey through the lives of the characters and the very different stories we
experience. To be able to develop my understanding of the play I want to research about
all the different topics like AI and fake news so when we go into the intensive rehearsal
space I am able to recite the knowledge I learnt to make the scenes more accurate.
Section 3: Evaluation
To be able to reflect on my work, I will look over my work and notes written in my script
each week, and I will use these to create a detailed action plan that will demonstrate
what I have achieved in the weeks and weeks to come. By doing this I will be able to be
more efficient in the rehearsal space and not fall behind in the work. Each week I will
also record my weekly reflection videos using the action plan I write, to show my first
rehearsal process. I will talk about any new ideas or changes, any scenes I explore,
ideas for characters, any notes I take, feedback from my director or practitioners and
what research I want to do to develop my understanding. I want to share my ideas with
people and expand on others' work to help them with their ideas, I also want people to
challenge me and ask why my ideas work so I can really think about what I should bring
to the creative process.

Project Action Plan and Timetable

Week Date Week Activity / What you are intending to do - Resources / What you will need to do it -
Beginning including independent study including access to workshops

1 During week one we got together in our Script, notebook, pen, folder, highlighter
20th groups and met our director for the first
February time. We read through our script and
2023 shared ideas that we initially had. We
also started to share ideas for themes
and genres of the play and started to
experiment in groups with different ways
of telling stories with different
characters, themes and genres. In an
independent study, I filmed my first
reflection video and took some notes on
my first thoughts about the script
buckets (I also reread the script a couple
of times to familiarize myself with it).
2 27th Within the second week of rehearsals, we Script, notebook, pen, folder, highlighter
February started devising some scenes
2023 (specifically ‘doctor’ the first scene of the
play). We worked in small groups and
combined ideas and started to improv
ways of creating a world of buckets.
When exploring the first scene we played
around with different scenarios and then
started to combine the smaller groups to
make the scene grander and with a more
epic theatre style. This week I filmed my
next reflection video and I started taking
notes on my script. I also started to
research more into some themes of the
script.
3 6th March On our third week of rehearsals, we Script, notebook, pen, folder, highlighter
2023 explored physical theatre, this included
us using movement at different speeds
and how doing so can create narratives.
We used to be bodies to create different
scenes of the play and we made different
objects and beings and saw how those
can be incorporated into our play. In
smaller groups we made a 5-minute
piece of physical theatre to a stimulus
given to us that was related to buckets,
this helped give a greater understanding
of some scenes and helped develop any
new ideas. I filmed my reflection video
and I have started to come up with ideas
for costumes.
4 13th March During our fourth week of rehearsals, we Script, notebook, pen, folder,
2023 explored improvisation with props and highlighter
costumes, we used puppetry with the
costumes and experimented with ways
we could interpret this in our play/
rehearsals. We also added props to our
5-minute devised piece and made notes
on how adding props changed the
piece's narratives or themes. Finally, we
also explored the scene ‘pet project’ and
expanded on the scene with techniques
we have learnt. I filmed my reflection
video, and I have started to look at
scenes I want to be in and then research
into those scenes.
5 20th March In our fifth week of rehearsals, we had a Script, notebook, pen, folder,
2023 different director Alice Lamb who work highlighter
with us to explore AI within the theatre.
This was really useful as one scene
“Terms and Conditions” heavily outlines
a strong AI character. In the lesson we
created (from scratch) pieces of theatre
that involved AI, this helped us to
develop ideas for when we then moved
on to scene 30 and staged it ourselves. I
filmed my reflection video for this week,
and I also looked over people's
PowerPoints for extra research.
6 27th March On the sixth week of rehearsals, we were Script, notebook, pen, folder,
2023 given our castings. We spent the majority of highlighter
Monday working on giving outlines, creating
characters and reading through the script.
On Tuesday, we worked with Deeps to start
some movement in scenes 11 and 1, we
worked together, shared ideas and nearly
finished the movement in scene 11. I have
filmed my reflection video and over Easter, I
will be finishing all my theory work and
learning my lines.
7 17th April – In the seventh week, we started intensive Script, notebook, pen, folder,
21st April rehearsals which meant we were in from highlighter
2023 9-5 every day of the week. On Monday,
we were checking websites to make sure
we had all the work we needed to start
rehearsals. Afterwards, we then started
working on the script and went over and
blocked (with ideas we had) the first 4
scenes. On Tuesday, we worked with our
movement director and recapped all
work we did movement-wise before
Easter, we also blocked scenes from 4 –
12. On Wednesday, we worked with
Deeps again to create a movement piece
for the scene “Being there” and we
created a slow-motion riot scene. We
also made some ensemble freeze frames
and transitions for the scene “status
update”. As well as that our director was
not with us on Wednesday so we had Lex
come in and help block and stage the
next couple of scenes. On Thursday, we
went over scenes Stan, Charity, Pouring
and Sipping, doctor and Better Belieber.
On Friday, we had a tutor session with
Deb and she spoke to us about writing
the character analysis and filming
reflection video 7. We blocked scenes
leading question, the end, kiss me 3 and
terms and conditions. For the next week,
I need to write my character analysis,
film my reflection video and recap all of
my scenes and their blocking.

8 24th April – Script, notebook, pen, folder,

28th April During the eighth week of rehearsals, we highlighter, any costume pieces or
2023 worked more on the play and filmed the 8th props to bring in
reflective video about our rehearsals. On
Monday we did a run-through of the play to
get a feel for what it would look like as a
whole and how long it would be, we also
worked on the transitions between scenes.
On Tuesday we ran scenes 1-10 to improve
slickness and take in any notes our director
had. We then went over transitions between
scenes and worked on scenes 10-20 as
well. On Tuesday we decided to cut 2
scenes “Terms and Conditions” and
“Teacher 2” because our run-through on
Monday was too long. On Wednesday we
did monologue work for those who had
monologues and I worked on my monologue
in scene 22, during Wednesday we had
been given our sounds for transitions and
scenes, so we spent some time practising
with the new sounds. We also had a
costume fitting to try on all costumes in the
play. On Thursday, we worked on adding all
elements of sound to the whole play and
worked on any other notes our director had
for us. On Friday, we had a tutor with Deb
and she spoke to us about reflection video
8, the final reflection task and the deadline
for all of our work. In rehearsals, we did 2
runs of the play and were given feedback
both times.
9 2nd May – 6th On the ninth week, we had tech Script, notebook, pen, folder,
May 2023 week and our 2 performances. On highlighter, any costume pieces or
Tuesday, we recapped all ensemble props to bring in
scenes with Deeps and did another
run-through of the play and when we
got to the last scene we spent a lot
of time working and polishing it as it
was the finale of the play. On
Wednesday we had a full day of tech
9 am – 10 pm, we managed to run
27 out of 30 of our scenes and work
with lighting, sound, props and
costumes with all transitions
between scenes. On Thursday, we
had a tech in the morning and
finished the last 3 scenes and in the
afternoon we worked on our
transitions between scenes in the
Ustinov to make the play nice and
slick. On Friday, we spent the
morning cleaning up the scene Stan
and the end and we did a tech run of
our transitions. In the afternoon we
did a dress rehearsal and watched
the other play Variations, and finally,
in the evening we had our first show.
On Saturday, we came in at around
4 and had a short tech to sort out a
transition that had a bit of trouble in
the first show, the second and last
performance happened shortly after.
