CHAPTER- SOLUTIONS
CONCEPT – COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES AND VAN’T HOFF FACTOR
ASSIGNMENT- 2

Q1 Read the paragraph and answer the following: Marks

Colligative properties of a solution depend upon the number of moles of the
solute dissolved and do not depend upon the nature of the solute. However,
they are applicable only to dilute solutions in which the solute does not
undergo any association or dissociation. For solutes undergoing such changes
Van’t Hoff introduced a factor called, Van’t Hoff factor (i). This helped not
only to explain the abnormal molecular masses of such solutes in the solution
but has also helped to calculate the degree of association or dissociation.

a. The Van’t Hoff factor for 0.1 M Ba(NO3)2 solution is 2.74. The degree of 1
dissociation is:
(i) 91.3% (ii) 87%
(iii) 100% (iv) 74%
b. Which of the following aqueous solutions will have the lowest freezing point? 1
(i) 0.1 molal solution of urea
(ii) 0.1 molal solution of acetic acid
(iii) 0.1 molal solution of sodium chloride
(iv) 0.1 molal solution of calcium chloride
c. During depression of freezing point in a solution, the following are in 1
equilibrium:
(i) liquid solvent, solid solvent
(ii) liquid solvent, solid solute
(iii) liquid solute, solid solute
(iv) liquid solute, solid solvent
d. Van’t Hoff factors x, y and z for association, dissociation and no change of 1
solute in the solution respectively are in the order:
(i) x <y < z (ii) x > z > y
(iii) x < z < y (iv) x > y > z

Q2 In each of the following questions, a statement of Assertion (A) is given

followed by a statement of reason (R). Of the statements, mark the correct
answer as:
(i) If both assertion and reason are true, and reason is the correct explanation
of the assertion.
(ii) If both assertion and reason are true, and reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.
(iii) Assertion is true, but reason is false.
(iv) Assertion is false, but reason is true.
a. (A): Any concentration of NaCl solution can be injected intravenously as 1
NaCl being a common table salt, is a harmless chemical.
(R): 0.9% (m/v) NaCl solution is isotonic with the fluid inside the blood cells.
b. (A): Van’t Hoff factor for benzoic acid in benzene is less than one. 1
(R): Benzoic acid behaves as a weak electrolyte in benzene.
c. (A): Increasing pressure on pure water decreases its freezing point. 1
(R): Density of water is maximum at 273 K.
d. (A): If red blood cells were removed from the body and placed in pure water, 1
pressure inside the cells increase.

(R): The concentration of the salt content in the cells decreases.
e. (A): The molecular weight of acetic acid determined by depression in freezing 1
point method in benzene and water is found to be different.
(R): Water is polar and benzene is non-polar.

Q3 Answer the following:

a. Determine the amount of CaCl2 (i= 2.47) dissolved in 2.5 L of water such that 3
its osmotic pressure is 0.75 atm at 27⁰ C. ( 3.42 g)
b. Determine the osmotic pressure of a solution prepared by dissolving 25 mg of 3
K2SO4 in 2 L of water at 25⁰ C, assuming that it is completely dissociated.
(5.27 x 10 -3 atm).
c. Calculate the depression in the freezing point of water when 10 g of 3
CH3CH2CHClCOOH is added to 250 g of water. Ka = 1.4 x 10-3, Kf = 1.86 K
Kg mol-1. (0.65⁰ C).
d. A 5% solution by mass of cane sugar in water has freezing point of 271 K. 3

water is 273.15 K. (269.06 K)
