ARTEFACT 1
Title: The influence of technology on hobbies and leisure time activities

Weblink: https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2021/10/26/the-influence-of-technology-on-

hobbies-and-leisure-time-activities/

Technology has long shifted the way the world does things and has changed consumer

demand a great deal. From shopping, working and studying to leisure activities,

emerging technologies are embedded in many areas of life. Even art exhibitions are

integrating technology such as Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality as a way of

expressing emotions or creating an all-encompassing experience. So, the physical world

and the virtual world intertwine exceptionally.

It comes as no surprise that many leisure pastimes are using various types of

technologies to either enhance the experience or to cater to consumer demand, which is

primarily a need for convenience. For example, if one looks at the gaming industry,

exponential growth can be seen in the online sector. More and more people wish to

access a website or a service rapidly and to gain instant gratification. In such a digital

world, individuals are drawn to virtual experiences and emerging technologies.

This being said, here’s a look at how technology has influenced – and continues impact

– hobbies and leisure time activities.

Playing video games on the go

Any gamer knows the importance of convenience and accessibility, and as such has

welcomed the appearance of portable game consoles. This way, they are able to play
3
their favourite game on the go, while commuting or travelling, without needing to bring

a laptop or extensive equipment. This is a great example of how technology has

influenced how people spend their free time or how they can enjoy their hobbies.

Like console games, even regular games are now more accessible. Many tech

companies, from Facebook to Casino Friday, are looking to invest in the development of

mobile game apps. Such businesses have taken inspiration from how traditional video

game providers are giving users the capacity to play wherever, whenever. There is an

obvious significant demand in this area.

Apart from highly interactive websites with wide-ranging game portfolios, there is a

high demand for mobile apps so that players can access them from their smartphones at

any time. When it comes to the Japanese industry, game operators have realized the

desire of loyal and avid players to access their favourite games from their smartphones.

There is no denying that smartphones have become the number one gadget used by huge

numbers of individuals worldwide. Japanese people are faithful to their smartphones.

Having games available on mobile is a great resource for those who are passionate about

playing in their free time.

Reading without a book

Reading books on tablets is not necessarily among the latest available technologies.

Such gadgets that individuals can use to download any type of book have been used for

a long time now, but this is an excellent example of how technology has influenced

people’s hobbies or the activities they love doing in their free time.

4
There is an obvious advantage to reading a book on a tablet. Some people prefer this

option to having to carry a book whenever they want to read, like on a train or when

they are commuting. This is especially useful for particularly heavy books. A tablet is a

sleek, easy-to-carry gadget, and one can read a book any time, not just on a day off

when relaxing on the sofa.

Virtual yet immersive events

Technology has also influenced the way in which people experience art and events. In

the context of the coronavirus pandemic, when many types of events were only available

online, people began creating various events that only took place virtually.

To make such an event an incredible and immersive experience, organizers and artists

integrate technologies such as Virtual Reality so that an art exhibition or any other type

of event can take place live, online, and can be interactive enough to create a fantastic

experience that is difficult to forget.

Plus, even physical art displays employ the use of technologies like VR or AR, to

beautifully integrate both worlds, and this sector is no stranger to technology to help art

enthusiasts spend their free time experiencing such events.

Creating art with drawing tablets

Whether creating art professionally or just as a hobby, one can do so digitally nowadays.

With the help of a drawing or graphic tablet, individuals can learn how to draw digitally

without having to purchase any art supplies like pencils or canvas. In this case, the

canvas is the tablet, and the world is the artist’s oyster, meaning it’s possible to let those

5
creative juices flow without fear of ruining the drawing or not knowing how to erase a

mistake.

Plus, if this is a hobby, it is easier to enjoy it when there’s free time. Apart from the fact

that one can easily transport this tablet, so that whenever the mood strikes it’s easy to

simply start making art, it is also a relaxing activity.

Title: Modern Technology

Modern technology is great when it works

If you can handle all the buggy quirks

Patience is key when dealing with the conveniences

When pushing all the right buttons takes geniuses

Modern technology is a great mind feeder

I keep a whole library in my e-reader

I went to read a book and what did I find

I pushed the button and the screen didn't shine

Modern technology is great for knowledge

More than you can learn in the greatest college

Anything you need to know is on the internet

And everything is accurate, it's a sure bet

7
Modern technology is the great new way

So, click away on your keyboard all day

Seeing daylight is not healthy anymore

There's no reason to ever go out the door

Modern technology saves tons of resources

Visiting friends belongs to the days of horses

Why visit friends when you can text day and night

Or see thousands on your favourite social site

Modern technology can still improve

So, we would never again need to move

Soon we will have a chip implanted

So, we can take being connected for granted

Title: How leisure activities have evolved over time

Weblink:https://thenerdstash.com/how-leisure-activities-have-evolved-over-time/

In the modern era, leisure is a very precious concept, almost a saviour of our modern

lives that in some opportunities are too stressful due to the responsibilities and the large

number of hours we dedicate to work. Leisure activities are the amount of free time

(which is the perfect framework to develop leisure activities), which were available to

workers in the past, began to increase progressively in the early nineteenth century, to

become a good leisure depends a lot on the region in which it is analysed, by customs,

traditions, economic situation and other factors that influence the possibilities of real

rest and what to do with free time.

At present, many children, young people, and adults invest several hours of their leisure

in activities where technology is involved. From chatting with friends in the different

applications of mobile devices, playing online casino games, to streaming platforms to

watch movies, they are all sedentary leisure activities that are increasingly frequent

throughout the world and are related to technological advances.

The Evolution of Leisure in The Last Hundred Years

Today, leisure is an essential base that sustains modern society. This is due to several

factors that changed very deeply during the twentieth century. Some of them are:

9
● In the first place, all the social conquests reached by the workers, which made

the workers have the right to work a specific number of hours, that there was a

weekly rest and that there were paid vacations.

● Progress through technology.

● Technology applied to domestic use greatly reduced the time spent on household

chores.

● The advances in the health area increased the life expectancy of people.

Somehow, these advances have facilitated that many people around the world have the

opportunity to enjoy the deserved daily, weekly, and annual rest. Therefore, leisure is

considered a basic right of humanity, very similar to any of the other rights that we

should all have, such as education and health.

On the other hand, it is important to take care of the quality of those leisure moments so

that they take full advantage and are a factor in personal, work, and even family growth.

Leisure will continue to evolve and adapt to social changes, but the most important thing

is that it is still a highly valued value that everyone should enjoy and care for.

10
Reflection 1

The first artefact is an article “The Influence of Technology on Hobbies and Leisure

Time Activities “by the editorial unit. The researcher only knew that technology may be

used for the gaming sector prior reading the paper. The article aptly articulates how

technology allows the integration of art exhibitions such as Virtual Reality or

Augmented Reality.

The second artefact chosen is a poem entitled ‘Modern Technology ‘by Darlene Walsh.

Before reading the article, the researcher didn’t know books could be read online. The

poem has highlighted to the researcher the advantages of modern technology.

The third artefact selected is an article entitled ‘How leisure activities have evolved over

time’ posted by Harry Thompson. The researcher knew that before the advent of

technology, people played board games and outdoor activities. However, the researcher

learned that with technological advancements, people may now amuse themselves by

playing computer games and others.

11
Reflection 2

This article ‘The influence of technology on hobbies and leisure time activities' was

done in standard English, the author used comparative analogy to show how technology

is swiftly replacing primitive methods.

The poem ‘Modern Technology ' the rhyming scheme is AA BB CC DD EE FF GG HH

Bathe line “I keep a whole library in my e-reader” implies that you can have books

electronically instead of physically. The repetition of ‘Modern Technology’ gave

emphasis that technology made it easier to partake in leisure activities.

The article ‘How leisure activities have evolved over time’ investigated generalisation

and analogy approaches. Generalisation was explored when leisure was stated as a

fundamental human right and analogous to other rights that we should all have.

12
Reflection 3

While conducting the school-based assessment, the researcher grasped that technology

has changed the way people partake in leisure activities in a positive manner.

The researcher has learnt to conduct research and developed his public speaking skills

and overcome the fear of presenting in front of peers as well as cooperating in a group

with them. While gathering information for her poem, the researcher learnt how to

rhyme by putting words together with a beat which helps with cognitive understanding

of words and where they fit to clearly transcend her message while reciting the poem.

As a student, the school-based assessment taught the researcher time management so

that she could complete her work within a specific timeline. The researcher was able to

make errors that were made.

13
Plan of Oral Presentation

The researcher has selected to present the piece in the form of a speech. The researcher

has selected this genre because the researcher is familiar with the concept of persuasive

writing. The artefacts that the researcher has selected for the research will be used to

give content for the speech.

14
Oral presentation

Pleasant afternoon everyone, standing before you are Gabrielle Williams. The purpose

of this speech is to make you aware of how technology impacts leisure time. Kindly

permit me to define the term leisure as it relates to my research being the use of free

time for enjoyment. Undoubtedly, the masses negatively viewed technology as just for

games; having an adverse effect on our free time and may add as a distraction for us.

However, allow me to enlighten you on the positive impact of technology as it relates to

leisure time engagements.

It cannot be debated that the way we use technology for leisure activities has evolved

into more than just playing games online but reading books on the go with the use of a

tablet, kindle or phone. As an avid reader there is no greater pleasure than to be afforded

the opportunity to read my favourite novels while I take a break from studying or

completing assignments. This form of technological advancement will spare you

carrying around heavy books and having to turn pages; you now have the option of

enjoying a great book with a light weight gadget.

Without a doubt technology has also allowed for me to indulge in viewing various art

exhibitions in the comfort of my home right on the sofa. One of my favourite leisure

time activities of visiting art museums and art galleries can still be savoured without

having to physically attend the event and deal with traffic and the weather condition.

Additionally, purchases can also be made virtually with the use of technology.

15
Furthermore, let us not forget the tremendous impact that technology has in sports.

While it is not instantly apparent many processes are easier and faster in the sports

industry. You would agree with me that a few years ago purchasing tickets to view a

sporting event such as cricket was an ordeal. Now, however, sports fanatics are able to

purchase tickets and view the games just by a click of a button in minutes.

Therefore, I am sure that you are convinced that leisure time activities have certainly

evolved to hobbies that can be enjoyed through the use of technology.

16
Group Written Report

This SBA began with the subject teacher explaining and introducing to the class about

the different tasks required for the completion of the SBA.The topic Technology was

selected by the group and the group members decided on subtopics such as the effects of

cyberbullying on teenagers, the advantages of technology in school, the disadvantages

of technology in school, the advantage of technology on the fashion industry and the

effects of social media on the family were investigated. Searching for artefacts wasn’t a

difficult task because ‘technology’ is a very popular topic and information was easily

found on the internet pertaining to general topic.

The group members then decided on the three most suitable artefacts which supported

our general topic the best. The three artefacts chosen were a poem titled ‘Modern

Technology’, a video titled ‘Effects of social media on family’ and an article titled

‘Benefits of Technology in the Classroom’ were all gathered using the

internet specifically google as the source of finding the artefacts.

The article “Benefits of technology in the classroom” was written by Janelle Cox.The

importance of technology in the classroom was highlighted. The author wrote in a

formal tone throughout the article. This article will be very helpful in preparing students

for the workforce and technology in classrooms.

17
The poem entitled ‘Modern Technology ‘by Darlene Walsh has highlighted to the

researcher the advantages of modern technology. The uses poem repetition of 'modern

technology 'emphasised how the technological advances made it easier to partake in not

only leisure activities but every activity.

The video by Allen Llabore entitled “Effects of Social Media on Family”, helped the

researcher to learn that social media makes teenagers antisocial and they often don't

know how to have in person communication and they gain withdrawal symptoms.

Title: Technology in the Classroom

Weblink:https://www.teachhub.com/technology-in-the-classroom/2019/11/benefits-of-
technology-in-t he-classroom/

As we sail through the 21st century, technology in the classroom is becoming more and
more predominant. Tablets are replacing our textbooks, and we can research just about
anything that we want to on our smartphones. Social media has become commonplace,
and the way we use technology has completely transformed the way we live our lives.
Educators, too, have seen first-hand the benefits of technology in the classroom.
They also recognize the importance of developing these technological skills in
students so they will be prepared to enter the workforce once they complete their
schooling.

The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been quite significant.
This widespread adoption of technology has completely changed how teachers teach
and students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies
while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn. By embracing
and integrating technology in the classroom, we are setting our students up for a
successful life outside of school.
