Abstract

The natural habitats, such as active caves, natural sinkholes, and the forest, to be exact, are

where species used to live and belong in the first place. Their diversity and interaction are what

should be evident in this type of land. However, it was destroyed due to some activities, such as

quarrying. Primarily, some of the quarries are no longer in use and have now been abandoned for

a long period of time, which has contributed to the loss of natural habitats for species, mainly

snakes and bats. In accordance with it, the researchers came up with the study entitled

“Sustainable Community Development: Using Revegetation on Abandoned Quarries' Ecological

Restoration at Barangay Piña, Taysan, Batangas." Aside from the fact that this study was

established to assist the community in mitigating this current environmental problem, it is also

aligned with focusing on the target Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), specifically SDG 15:

Life on Land. In line with this, revegetation will be proposed as an innovative solution to putting

an end to this problem, which is associated with some of the target goals of the aforementioned

SDG. Based on the research findings, the solution was mainly suggested by the residents;

however, the researchers devised an innovative approach to this matter. In order to effectively

implement the project, a prototype and the significance of each material to be utilized were

presented. Moreover, the specific goals and objectives of this intended project were also listed to

stick to what this study is trying to focus on. With that being said, the proponents highly assumed

that this innovative solution would mitigate the current environmental problem that the

community is facing, thereby improving and contributing to attaining a sustainable, developed

community with a rich natural ecosystem and healthy environment consisting of diversity and

interaction of species.

Introduction

Environmental concerns have been on increase for several years and currently are expanding,

particularly in the Philippines. The Philippines is known for its beautiful mountains, preserved

islands, and riverbanks, which provide essential ecosystem services to nearby towns. It is also

home to a wealth of natural resources. The Philippines are also renowned for their unique

biodiversity, where rare flora and animals can be discovered. However, the Philippines is also

one of the many nations that frequently experiences environmental disasters like typhoons,

landslides, and the most harmful man-made activity that is frequently carried out in the

Philippines is the Quarrying. This is because human activities that are not eco-friendly and

contribute to unfavorable outcomes and damage to the environment.

Quarrying is the process of removing stones or other materials for construction from the ground

and riverbanks. It also entails the removal of rock, sand, gravel, and other non-metallic rocks

from mountainside and riverbanks for use as building supplies. Quarrying operations have

become a significant component of the Philippine economy and structural progress as a result of

the demands from development and operation activities and population increase because it is

beneficial for the construction of roads and infrastructures, particularly in rural areas. On the

other hand, it has consistently been a cause for worry. Quarrying-related complaints began to be

made in the 1890s. There are still problems with quarrying, and they have been reported in the

media. In several regions and rural areas of the Philippines, there have been reports of illegal

quarrying activities being carried out on beaches, riverbanks, and mountains.

One of the largest and busiest quarries in the Philippines is situated in Taysan, Batangas, where

numerous organizations or businesses associated with the quarry still exist. Brgy. Pina is where

the largest quarry site in Taysan, Batangas, is situated. 116 hectares of quarry are located at Piña,

Taysan, Batangas. Problems caused by this activity include visual encroachment, damage to

landscapes, traffic, smoke, noise, dust, damage to caverns, loss of land, and harm to species

habitats.

According to several residents, destroyed caves, sinkholes and deforestation are evident around

the area. With this in mind, the destruction of natural habitats is the current problem that the

community is facing. Additionally, some of the species such as snakes and bats have been seen

in some areas of the community which really bothers the residents. They are terrified of these

species whenever found on streets and households, some were found dead, some were found

alive. To generalize, these species are becoming endangered in the community as they lack

habitat to stay and live in.

This is the ultimate reason as to why the proponents have chosen Brgy. Pina, Taysan, Batangas,

in order to assist the community in mitigating this current environmental problem. The

researchers highly assumed that an ecological restoration of abandoned quarries would bring

back the natural habitats that the species belong to in the first place. Building a sustainably

developed community is what this study is trying to focus on. The proponents established a study

entitled “Sustainable Community Development: Using Revegetation on Abandoned Quarries'

Ecological Restoration at Barangay Piña, Taysan, Batangas". Furthermore, the probable option

that the proponents are pondering is to help restore the abandoned quarries of Brgy. Pina,

Taysan, Batangas through revegetation by planting understory shrubs and trees which also

involves replacement of invasive plants with native ones. The development of revegetation

would support a healthy ecosystem and further increase the population of snakes and bats which

are now on the level of an endangered species in the community. Aside from the fact that this

method is planting trees which is a common solution to degraded land, the residents were the

ones who mainly suggested this method. However, the researchers devised an innovative

approach to this issue. The idea of revegetation is not just about planting trees but planting native

understory trees that grow in low light and serve as

species’ hiding places. This innovative solution will be beneficial not only for the species but to

the residents as well, in preventing hazardous impacts of degraded land to occur around the area.

The present study focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 15, which targets one of its goals

to reduce the degradation of natural habitats and halt the loss of biodiversity. The loss of natural

habitats due to quarry abandonment has altered the diversity and interaction of species mainly

snakes and bats. The proposed study is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life

On Land. Specifically, as this proposed study is aligned with Life On Land, this will be effective

with some of the objectives of this Sustainable Development Goal, such as the aim of improving

the habitat quality on abandoned quarries and controlling the long-term consequences of habitat

loss.

In this study, the ecological restoration of abandoned quarries is crucial in achieving a

sustainable developed community to be conducted at Brgy. Piña, Taysan, Batangas. The

proposed innovative solution of revegetation is highly beneficial to the species like snakes and

bats and contributes to the increase of their population, thereby constructing a sustainably

developed community supporting a natural ecosystem and healthy environment.

Our second chosen community is Mabacong, Batangas City. The area suffers from the

dangerous effect of the kaingin method. Still, it didn’t become our top priority community since

it is really a serious matter because people are using the trees for their business purpose. Also,

there would be an implemented law and penalty to anyone who wouldn’t replant trees and we

The respondents were questioned about their opinion on the possible solution to be

implemented on the current environmental problem that their community is facing. Among the

(15) respondents,

(13) or 86.7% suggested tree planting as a way to resolve the degraded land and forest caused by

abandoned quarries. On the other hand, (2) or 13.3% recommended joining an organization that

Therefore, the said results conclude that it is relevant to address this issue and propose an

innovative solution to help the species as well as the residents in mitigating this problem of their

community.

III. Proposed Prototype

The loss of natural habitats, including active caves and natural sinkholes, due to quarry

abandonment in Brgy. Piña, Taysan, and Batangas are the main concerns in this community. As

a result of the abandoned quarry, the surrounding ecological environment was greatly affected.

The researchers interviewed 15 respondents who are currently residing near the abandoned

quarry in Brgy. Pina, Taysan, and Batangas and gathered their insights about the area. Based on

the interview, all 15 respondents indicated that destroyed caves, sinkholes, and deforestation are

evident in the abandoned quarry. Almost all of the respondents observed species that had no

habitat to stay and live in, such as snakes and bats. The respondents indicated that there are some

signs about tree planting displayed in the area. However, residents are paying less attention to it.

According to one of the residents being interviewed personally, there are potential hazards that

this abandoned and destroyed quarry could bring, and one of those is rockfall hazards, which

threaten passing vehicles and residents.

The researchers highly assumed that ecological restoration of abandoned quarries would

strengthen biodiversity protection, improve the habitat quality of various species, and protect the

residents from potential hazards as well. Therefore, the study aims to explore an innovative

solution to this issue. The probable option that the proponents are pondering is to help restore the

abandoned quarry of Brgy. Piña, Taysan, Batangas, through revegetation by planting understory

shrubs and trees, which also involves replacing invasive plants with native ones since some of

the invasive trees, such as mahogany trees, are still present on the abandoned quarry. Therefore,

revegetation, which is more than just planting trees, would help in restoring the natural habitats

that existed before such quarrying activities. And so, the researchers introduced an artificial slope

construction to be designed and filled with layered construction waste materials in order to have

an area that was applicable for revegetation methods.

Statement of Need

The present study aims to utilize revegetation as a solution to dealing with abandoned quarries

that contributes to the restoration of natural habitats in Brgy. Piña, Taysan, Batangas. The snakes

and bats seen outside the forest and found everywhere, such as on streets and in households, are

now considered endangered species in the community. Therefore, it is a serious challenge in the

community that needs to be addressed to put an end to this matter.

The proponents came up with the method of artificial slope construction and revegetation as

an innovative approach to habitat restoration. This process focuses on planting understory shrubs

and trees or replacing invasive plants with native ones. Understory shrubs and trees include trees

that grow in low light and serve as animals' hiding places. The said solution of planting trees was

mainly suggested by the respondents as a way to recover natural habitats. Since some of the trees

are still found on the abandoned site, like mahogany trees, an invasive tree whose leaves

decompose slowly and leak chemicals onto the soil, it prevents other crops from flourishing and

damages the environment. The proponents developed a strategy of not just planting trees but also

native trees that encourage a healthy ecosystem in the community.

The proponents established an innovative solution and the significance of each material that will

be utilized:

Artificial slope construction:

Rock debris, Construction waste materials and Loess - This is used to fill the mining pits.

This filling activity enables reusing waste materials in order to level the ground accordingly and

more appropriate to the construction of vegetation.

Deformation monitoring equipment - This is necessary to track the subsidence and

deformation during the construction and after the construction has been completed. This

equipment measures the stability of the artificial slope that was constructed.

Hydroseeding Machine and Equipment - This equipment consists of a holding tank and a

pump to spray the mixture of seeds, fertilizer, and water on the soil to control the soil from

erosion. This machine is necessary for planting a larger area quickly.

Catchwater drain/Water Pipe - The purpose of this is to catch the surface water before it

reaches the road which prevents rainfall and control erosion.

Water storage/Reservoir - This is a reservoir that is built in to collect the surface water and

rainfall for pre-irrigation use.

Native trees and shrubs - This is the most important in the development of revegetation.

Before, the trees that existed on the abandoned land were invasive trees which harmed the

environment like mahogany trees. Native trees support a healthy ecosystem and are effective as

an animal’s hiding places.

Project Goals

The purpose of this study is to assess the success of quarry restoration to be conducted at Brgy.

Piña, Taysan, Batangas, and improve the habitat quality on quarry wasteland. The proponents

examined an innovative approach on how to use and improve the living space of species in

"brown land" type land, thereby constructing an ecosystem with rich biological communities and

well-structured habitats. The proposed solution would further control the loss of natural habitats

and establish a natural ecosystem.

The government has implemented awareness campaigns, including tree planting signage and

posters on some sides of the area. However, the residents are paying less attention to it. For this

reason, the researchers conducted this study to assist the chosen community in mitigating the

problem. With that being said, a proposed innovative solution would help them attain their goal

of putting an end to this problem.

In relation to this, the proponents were able to establish the following goals in conducting this

study:

● To improve the habitat quality of species such as snakes and bats

● To recover the land or soil that has been removed

● To control the long-term consequences of the loss of natural habitat

● To raise awareness among the residents about biodiversity protection.

In addition, the researchers enumerated the significance of each component that will be utilized

in implementing the innovative solution:

Artificial slope construction:

Rock debris, Construction waste materials and Loess - This is used to fill the mining pits.

This filling activity enables reusing waste materials in order to level the ground accordingly and

more appropriate to the construction of vegetation.

Project Implications

The restoration of abandoned quarries, specifically the natural habitats, would contribute to

improving the habitat quality of species, mainly snakes and bats, controlling the long-term

consequences of habitat loss, and strengthening the diversity and interaction of species. This

study highlights the development of a sustainable community through ecological restoration of

abandoned quarries in Brgy. Pina, Taysan, and Batangas. The researchers proposed an innovative

solution: using revegetation to recover the natural habitats that are currently abandoned.

Based on research findings, species like snakes and bats are the animals most affected by

this habitat loss. The development of revegetation would help the species return to where they

belong in the environment. Additionally, the said prototype is more than just planting trees; it is

planting native trees suitable as habitat and hiding places for species. According to the survey

results, the

solution was mainly recommended by the residents. The researchers devised an innovative

approach that originated from this solution of “planting trees”. The proposed solution promotes

biodiversity protection and supports the natural ecosystem, thereby developing a sustainable

community.

Following the online interview, the group then, now constructed the content of the paper.

They eventually examine their proposed prototype and continuously do their assigned part on the

understood every task. But then, there were some issues that arose during the making of the

paper such as the lack of experience on the field. Later on, everyone finished and revised their

paper in order to be submitted properly and effectively.
