Lab Buster

Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve been fascinated by the wonders of scientific
experiments. Binge-ing through every episode of MythBusters and The Game Theorist Channel,
this led me to believe that even the silliest or nonsensical questions can be tested whether they
are true or false. That is what I want to project with this artwork.
In this artwork, I only use A4 paper, mechanical pencils, a few rulers, some eraser,
compass, and color pencils. My character is seen to be running from the main door as if he is
having fun running around. A bunch of easter eggs can be seen like the printing in the shirt, the
vandalized working table, and the whiteboard behind. Also, the main character is referenced
from the channel, TheOdd1sOut. A few shadings here and there using hatching techniques to
really sell the idea of it moving.
Even though I’ve grown up, I still wanted to learn more about different solutions to
problems that are pretty much questionable. For example, to lessen the number of fabrics that are
discharged to waste facilities and solve world hunger, would it be possible to create edible
clothing lines that would last long enough for an entire day? Well, it’s hilariously nonsensical
and is pretty much a weird idea. But it is something that is possible with today’s technology.
I created a drawing that appears to be in a magnifying glass. As a kid, I’ve been
indecisive about what career I would like to pursue in the future. I have chosen engineering
mostly because I’ve been fond of building and creating objects or something that may function
or not. I still remember creating a fully functioning atm machine where I can deposit a card and
access its inside that is all made from cardboard materials.
I ended up choosing Chemical Engineering as my career for a few reasons. Firstly, is
something related to my advocacy. Found on the island of Mindoro are vast varieties of
biodiversity and natural resources. However, as presented by modernity, problems constantly
arise that affect the environment, namely the oil spill incident, Arbor Rocks mining on top of
mountains, drought seasons and many more. Additionally, I’ve been part of movements
concerning the environment in Mindoro. Being a young parliamentarian, I wanted to do
something regarding the issues around our beloved island. It is possible for me to utilize the
knowledge gained from my studies.

Invaders

Ever been strolling by the beach, admiring the waves, just enjoying the view? You sat
along the sands, completely relaxed. You temporarily forget\ your duties and responsibilities in
school or work. Then as you lay down and stretched your arms wide, you felt something. Icky
and feels like plastic. Then there it is, garbage spread all in every direction. Plastic bottles
floating around the sea, plastic remains from a certain chip company, and the occasional, floating
slippers.
Mindoro island contains precious natural resources, land and/or sea. Delightful sights can
be seen all throughout the island like the Mt. Halcon, the wettest mountain in the Philippines,
and white beaches. However, as reported from the Manila Bulletin, around 22 tons of garbage
collected along the MIMAROPA rivers. Calapan river in Oriental Mindoro, and Sabang river in
Sablayan and Pandurucan River in San Jose in Occidental Mindoro were reported to have
amassed a ton of garbage last 2019.
I created this sculpture as a means for me to showcase the aftereffects of dumping our
thrashes into the sea, not cleaning nor be responsible in their own garbage. This free-standing
sculpture is created through an additive process utilizing materials that are commonly found near
bodies of water. Plastic bottles, flip flops, plywood, and cartons. I first cut the necessary pieces
that will build up to this creation. Applied firstly some primer paints before I applied different
colors of pieces using acrylic paint. The way I designed it is based on searches on the internet on
how a piranha would look like and an anglerfish. I tried combining the two as seen from the
mouth part and the olfactory bulb with a glowing substance. A bunch of seaweed made from
plastic was created to really sell the idea that it is deep in the water. Lastly, using a glue gun, I
meticulously glued each part together. Lastly, I placed it on a colored plywood as base and
placed some barbeque sticks as stands for placement purposes.
I made it into a not so pleasing nor aesthetic looking piece of sculpture. Personally, I do
not like the idea of telling a story of how problematic and ruining a particular subject is and
creating something that is amazing. I am not too particular in glorifying the situation. This is an
invasive specimen mutated from an amalgamation of different materials found commonly near
bodies of water.
Being a youth advocate in nurturing and maintaining forests and nature all around
Mindoro and a young parliamentarian, I wanted to create a sculpture that would capture how as

time passes by natural resources and natural habitats are on a decline. Additionally, I would like
to emphasize how important coastal cleaning, responsibility and being a considerate citizen is.
For us to enjoy and live a life that would last long, I believe investing for future generations to
come would help maintain those precious natural resources and habitats.
In conclusion, this sculpture compasses my advocacy as a youth advocate and youth
leader, as well as informing citizens the worsening status of Mindoro island in terms of natural
resources.
