GRADE 6 NARRATIVE REPORT ON SCHOOL BASED READING PROGRAM

“Pagsasanay sa Pagbasa sa Paaralan at Pamayanan, 4Ps in Reading Literacy”

“Every Child a Reader”, Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiative), Strengthening

Numeracy and Literacy programs. These were the reading programs initiated by the
Department of Education in the past to present administration which has only one objective,
that is to eradicate reading illiteracy among the Filipino learners all over the country. Despite
of the efforts made by the government to combat reading crisis, still we need to double our
efforts to raise the level of reading among our learners. According to the result of the study
conducted by the Program for the International Student Assessment (PISA) last 2018,
Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension among the 79 participating countries.
The alarming result of the study suggest that we need to strive harder and focus on reading to
increase the reading and comprehension level of Filipino learners.
To combat the problem about reading in our school, we developed our own school-
based reading program which is the “Pagsasanay sa Pagbasa sa Panahon ng Pandemya, 4Ps in
Reading Literacy”. Amid the pandemic that occurred for almost 2 years, the teachers find
some alternative ways in order for the learners to continue reading at home because reading
must continue despite of the condition we are facing that time.
Because the pandemic is already in the process of becoming endemic, we transformed
our reading program into “Pagsasanay sa Pagbasa sa Paaralan at Pamayanan, 4Ps in Reading
Literacy”. In this program, teachers and parents will be able to help the learners to read and
comprehend through our remedial reading program. In our school, we integrated the reading
program across all the learning areas in all grade levels. We incorporated the 5-minute
reading time as our start-up activity in every lesson. In Grade 6, we do the spelling activity
everyday through 5 item spelling words until the learners master the correct spelling of the
given words. We also give the meaning of the spelled words, then we use it in a sentence.
After the spelling activity, we do the choral reading, group reading, paired reading, and
individual reading. We also use the reading buddy technique during their free time. In this
technique, the teacher assigned a good reader to be the reading buddy of the struggling
reader. At home, we instructed our parents to follow-up their children in reading at home. To
see to it that parents will do their task as a remedial reading teacher at home, I ask them to
sign the reading materials after the reading session. The teacher will evaluate if there is an
improvement done during the reading remediation at home by letting the children read the
given reading materials in the school.
Through our program, Teachers and Parents are tandem in facilitating remedial
reading among our learners. Our reading program is not only limited inside the school and
home but also within the community where everybody who wants to render their service as a
reading facilitator are welcome. Through hand-to-hand efforts, we will be able to raise the
reading level of our learners. If not totally eradicate reading illiteracy, we should be able to
rise our country from being the lowest ranking country in terms of reading comprehension to
higher level.
