Synchronous online classes using Zoom

 In Zoom Webinar mode, the instructor can use the PowerPoint presentations with
instructor in a video window talking through the slides. They can also shift temporary
presentation credential to a student. They can also share their screen to show
something from their computer.
 There is also a Gallery view that allows the instructor to see all of the students in the class in
‘video boxes’.
 In the PowerPoint there can be hotspots or videos that can be viewed by the class in
real time. When asked to break into groups the class can be sent to breakout rooms
(predetermined by the instructor and all go to a room with one click from the instructor-
back too).
 There is also a whiteboard that the instructor (or someone he/she designates) to draw, type,
highlight, etc. to be able to explain a concept.
 Students can use the chat and Q&A buttons at any time (either allowing everyone to see
or just the instructor). At the end of class, the instructor can download the entire chat
sequence to address questions that were not answered.
 The instructor can also ask the students questions that they reply to with a polling
feature that allows the instructor to gauge student comprehension in real time.
 There are several nonverbal interactions that can take place. Students can raise their
hands with a symbol on their ‘video square’ as well as answer yes or no. They can ask for
things to go slower or faster with symbols as well. Another feedback feature is the
ability to show a thumbs up or clapping symbol on the students ‘video square’ when
asked if they understand or when they want to give positive feedback about something.
There are other symbols too- thumbs down, coffee cup, etc. to express other things.
 The whole thing can be recorded, and the URL can be sent to anyone who missed the
class for asynchronous viewing.
 The instructor can also utilize closed captioning.
