At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Define what is light and diffraction;
2. Generalize what is diffraction from a single-slit; and
3. Demonstrate how the intensity pattern for a single-slit diffraction and double-slit
diffraction differ.

III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Engage
1. Prayer
Let us all stand, and Ms/Mr ______ please lead the
prayer. “Our Father…”

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning ma’am!
Good morning classmates!
It’s nice to see you today!
Before you sit, please pick up the pieces of paper/plastics
on the floor and arrange your chairs properly.

3. Checking of Attendance
Class representative, is there anyone absent today? Class rep: No one ma’am.

Very good! Give yourselves Winner Clap! 1,2, clap clap clap
1,2, clap clap clap
1,2, clap clap clap
WINNER!
4. Energizer
Before we start our lesson, let’s energize ourselves first by
following the dance steps from the video that I will play.
Okay? Okay ma’am!
[students will dance along]
Seems like we are all energized from the dance,
please sit back and stay awake as we learn and
discover things with Science today!

5. Review
I have here a big scrupled paper which I will give to you
and you pass it to your classmates. To make our
review a little exciting, when the song starts and when
the music stops, whoever holding the paper will
standup and open a layer from the scrupled paper. The
paper includes task written on it and all you need to do
is obey and do the task. Did you understand the
instructions?
All: Yes ma’am!
(pass the scrupled paper and play the music)
[play along]
First stop task: Answer What is our topic last meeting?

Second stop task: Give 3 things you’ve learned from

the last discussion.

Third stop task: Lucky Day! Pass this ball to your crush
and let her/him do the task for you!

Last stop task: Say anything that can motivate the

whole class.

Did you have fun? Magnificent! It seems like not only

you study well but also loves to be in this class.
B. Explore
1. Motivation
In this part of the class, I will group you into two and
we’ll play a game called FOUR PICS ONE WORD.

INSTRUCTION: Given the four pictures, guess the

word. Whichever team gets to shout their name first will
be given a chance to answer. Whichever team scores
the highest will receive an abominable reward!

Number 1:
(insert pics) DIFFRACTION

Number 2:
(insert pics) SINGLE

Number 3:
(insert pics) SLIT

Number 4:

DIFFRACTION
2. Presentation
As per our activity, our lesson today is all about?
Yes, Winning group? Our topic is all about
Single Slit Diffraction.

Class, give them Angel’s Clap. 1,2, toot toot

1,2, toot toot
1,2, tooooot

When we examine light waves, we learn about their many

features like, how they reflect back in the process of reflection,
how they change direction in the process of refraction, and
how they interfere with other light waves. But, what do you
believe happens when light waves collide with a gap? Will it go
straight through the gap, or will it shift its direction? Let's
investigate via a video about Single Slit Diffraction.

(plays video)
Source: Diffraction Demo: Single Slit and Circular Aperture.

So, what did you learn from the video? [student answers]

Very good!
C. Explain
1. Discussion
(ppt presentation)
Diffraction of light is defined as the bending of light
around corners such that it spreads out and illuminates
areas where a shadow is expected. In general, it is
hard to separate diffraction from interference since
both occur simultaneously. The silver lining which we
witness in the sky is caused due to diffraction of light.
When the sunlight passes through or encounters the
cloud, a silver lining is seen in the sky.
The single slit diffraction’s meaning is that an
alternating dark and bright pattern can be seen when
light is imposed on a slit with a size corresponding to
the wavelength of light.
The amount of diffraction of light depends on the
relative size of the wavelength of light to the size of the
opening. Hence, diffraction effects get less obvious as
the gap gets larger.

(insert ice breaker for refocus of students)

The single-slit diffraction experiment is similar to the
double-slit performed by Thomas Young in 1801.
 Through the double-slit experiment, Thomas
Young were able to disproved the theory of
Newton about light having particles called photons.
Hence, this experiment concluded that light is a
wave.
Going back, the only differences between a single slit
and a double-slit experiment are the diffraction patterns
and the intensity graphs.

The Central maximum is the phenomena of light

bending or diffraction may be seen in single-slit
diffraction. Additionally, due to this phenomenon, light
from coherent sources interferes with itself, resulting in
the creation of the diffraction pattern, a recognizable
pattern on the screen.
2. Generalization
Who can summarize the discussion today?
Yes, Ms. Mr. ___?
[student answers]

D. Elaborate
1. Application
For our last activity, I will group you again into 3
groups. After forming the group, one representative
will go to front to pick a paper which have
corresponding tasks. Remember to do your tasks
creatively because you will be graded according to
a criterion.
(insert criteria)

Tasks: - Demonstrate and present the intensity

pattern of single-slit diffraction via human diorama
- Demonstrate and present the intensity pattern
of double-slit diffraction
- Make a short song about what you have learned
today

Questions:
 What is diffraction? [student answers]

 What is single-slit diffraction? [student answers]

 How single-slit and double-slit diffraction differ from

each other? [student answers]

 What are the central maxima? [student answers]

E. Evaluate
1. Evaluation

Direction: Identify whether the statement is TRUE or FALSE.

Write T if it is true, and F is it is not.

___1. Diffraction is bending of light around corners.

___2. In a single slit experiment, an alternating dark and bright
pattern can be seen when light is imposed on a slit with a size
corresponding to the wavelength of light.
___3. Diffraction effects get much obvious as the gap gets
larger.
___4. Double-slit diffraction experiment concluded that light is
a wave.
___5. The Central minimum is the phenomena of light bending

ANSWER KEY:
1. T
2. T
3. F
4. T
5. F

Thank you very much for your active participation. Give

yourselves Kapuri-puri clap. 123, 123, Kapuri-puri!
So, that is all for today. Goodbye class! Goodbye ma’am! Goodbye
classmates! See you
around!
