As a native Vietnamese who is interested in botany, I’ve seen many species of plants
native to my country. But to choose the most significant one, then I would definitely
go for the rice crop, one of the most important plants of Vietnam.

I first got to know this plant when I was in primary school. My biology teacher was
teaching about crops when he/she told us that it was the rice plant which plays the
most vital role in Vietnam.

There are two principal causes for the importance of rice plant in my country. The
first reason is that it produces rice, a staple food for most Vietnamese people, which
is high in/rich in carbohydrate and suit our appetite. Secondly, agricultural products
like rice are what we focus and pride ourselves on in the international market. In fact,
Vietnam is the second most productive country in rice production and our rice has
been exported all over the world, which generates a lot of income for our country.
Whenever I think of the plant, it gives me a pleasant feeling. As we Vietnamese are
well-known for the long-standing rice civilization, rice plant has become a symbol
of our country.

Chắc chắn rồi. Mặc dù làm nông nghiệp đòi hỏi rất nhiều nỗ lực và đầu tư, nhưng đó
là một hoạt động có lợi nhuận. Điều này được thể hiện qua rất nhiều nông dân thành
công ở Việt Nam, những người được tiếp cận với nền nông nghiệp tiên tiến. Do đó, để
kiếm sống tốt được từ nông nghiệp, tôi muốn trở thành người có hiểu biết về tất cả các
phương pháp tiếp cận và am hiểu về lĩnh vực này hơn là một nông dân truyền thống.
Đối với một người quan tâm đến việc làm nông như tôi, điều này chắc sẽ không mất
nhiều nỗ lực.

Yeah, definitely. Although farming requires a lot of efforts and investments, it is a
profitable activity. This is shown by plenty of successful farmers in Vietnam who
have access to advanced agriculture. Therefore, to earn a good living from
farming, I would want to be one with an understanding of all the latest approaches and
know-hows in the area rather than a conventional/traditional farmer. For someone
who is interested in farming like me, this shouldn’t take a lot of efforts.

Tôi nghĩ rằng cây tre có tầm quan trọng lớn ở Việt Nam. Việc sử dụng tre đa dạng từ
việc làm đũa đến việc xây dựng các công trình truyền thống. Nhưng với mục đích thứ
hai, vật liệu này phần lớn đã được thay thế bằng các vật liệu mạnh hơn. Về mặt giá trị
phi vật thể, cây tre không chỉ thêm sắc xanh cho rừng các toàn nhà cao tầng mà chúng
còn tượng trưng cho hy vọng ở Việt Nam ngày xưa. Do đó, không phải ngẫu
nhiên/tình cờ mà tre lại là một chủ đề phổ biến trong nhiều bài thơ trong văn học Việt
Nam.

I think bamboos are of great importance in Vietnam. The use of bamboo ranges
from making chopsticks to building traditional constructions. But for the latter
purpose, the material has been largely replaced by stronger materials. As for its
intangible values, not only can bamboo trees add greenery to concrete jungles but
they also symbolize hope in ancient Vietnam as well. Therefore, it’s no accident that
bamboo is a common subject in many poems in Vietnamese literature.

The first place that comes to my mind is spacious gardens, in which many big trees
are grown for their shade and breezes. On top of that, small potted plants like cactus
are common in the living room, serving as a good decoration for the room as well as
making it more alive and airy.

Trees are undoubtedly more important than ever nowadays. They not only offer
