1. Different hotels apply different hotel rates.Explain 5 factors that affect hotel rates.
i. Hotel location-location of the hotel influences the prices of hotel rooms.
ii. Facilities offered-if fancy facilities are offered in an institution, it therefore influences expensive
payment.
iii. Meals offered-type of meals are offered differently in different hotels.
iv. Length of stay/duration-the more days taken for accommodation, the higher the rates.
v. Type of room occupied-the type of room determines the rates as well as the rate of demand for that
particular room.
2. Explain 5 reasons why hotels are classified.
i. For control of hotel taxation.
ii. To ensure that the standards of the hotel are maintained.
iii. To serve as a guide for developers on the facilities required for a certain class of hotel.
iv. To determine and control hotel tariffs rates of the price as it varies from one class to another.
v. To create healthy competition amongst hotels.
3. The Roman Empire grew to cover parts of Europe, the Middle East and the North of Africa stretching to modern
day Somalia. Explain 5 contributions of the Romans to early travel.
i. The Romans introduced common common language and currency which eased communication.
ii. Trade and military activity encouraged excellent roads.Through this, movement was eased.
iii. Political stability promoted trade and travel as empire guaranteed security.
iv. Romans sought to escape the cities in the heat of summer.
v. They developed resorts which they called hospices which which contributed to the word
hospitality.
4. Explain five factors that discouraged travel and tourism to Kenya’s hinterland during the 18 th century.
i. In the 18th century, travel was meant for the rich or the upper classes of people, therefore lower class
people didn’t have a chance to explore.
ii. Time also affected travel-the rich had a feeling that travel did not waste their time since they had
money.
iii. Finance-when one has money,he/she feels free to move to any immediate area for leisure or fun but
the lower class would feel that it’s a waste of money.
iv. Lack of interest-not every individual is interested in leisure or movements from one place to another.
5. The East Africa Travel and Tourism Association was formed in the year 1947.Outline five of its: a)Achievements:
i. It promotes international trade.
ii. Promotes tourism to Africa from all corners of the world.
iii. It has led to the establishment of parks and reserves.
iv. It has unified the East African countries.
v. It has enhanced development of tourist infrastructure.

b)Reasons for its collapse:

i. Disagreement between member countries.


ii. Different economic systems between countries.
iii. Failure of plan in tourism.
