DRY TYPE TRANSFORMERS – FAQ AND

ADVANTAGES

Technological advances and improved manufacturing processes in recent years means

that Dry Type Transformers now have many advantages in comparison to oil
transformers, and are a cost effective and extremely reliable solution suitable to most
environments.

What is more commonly used as a winding material for
dry type transformers – Copper (Cu) or Aluminum (Al)?
ANSWER:  Aluminum is more commonly used for its thermal properties similar to the
resin – this guarantees more suitable thermodynamic movement, which in turn has
a positive impact on the expected lifespan of the transformer.

Is Copper not a better winding material than

Aluminum for Dry Type Transformers?
ANSWER: Aluminum is better due the above-mentioned improved thermal
properties.   This has a positive impact on the expected lifespan, and is part of the
reason that we are offering an industry-best 2 Year Guarantee.

Is the life expectancy of Copper wound transformers

longer than Aluminum wound transformers?
ANSWER: Given the same technical characteristics, it is the same for both.

What is the life expectancy of Dry Type

Transformers?
ANSWER:   Generally speaking, it is a minimum of 25 years.  This is similar to Oil
Type Transformers.  Transformers’ life expectancy is naturally dependent on
operational conditions.

What percentage of dry type transformers that you

manufacture is Copper wound vs Aluminum wound?
ANSWER: 90% Aluminum vs 10% Copper.

What is the guarantee period on your Dry Type

Transformers?
ANSWER:   We offer an industry-best full 2 Year Guarantee.

Are there scenarios or applications where Copper

wound transformers are more suitable than Aluminum
wound units?
ANSWER: In Dry Type Cast Resin Transformers, the only impact is on the Low Voltage
Coils, and in particular to the thermal plates.  These are the only active parts that are
exposed to atmospheric agents – the remaining parts are fully cast in epoxy resin or
impregnated in polyester resin and therefor insulated from the environment.

The choice between the two materials can depend on their chemical reactions to the
presence of chemicals in the installation environment.
