Concept Notes:

WHAT IS SOCIETY?

• the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community.


• an organization or club formed for a particular purpose or activity.

Example:
"the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF SOCIETIES?

Hunting and Gathering society

• Recognized as the earliest and simplest form of society. Generally characterized by its small size and
is composed mainly of families. They are nomadic since they spend most of their time searching for
food and thus, have no permanent territory.

Pastoral society
• A society characterized by the domestication of animals for food for a more stable and predictable
food supply. Have larger population than hunting society

Horticultural society

• Primarily engage in the small scale cultivation of plants, fruits and vegetables and the domestication
of animals. They are semi-nomadic, which means that they travel to another place when they have
depleted the resources in one area.

Agrarian or agricultural society

• is a further evolution of the pastoral and horticultural societies. It involves the large-scale and long-
term cultivation of crops and domestication of animals. Characterized by improved technology and

the use of tools to aid in farming.
Feudal society

• is based on the ownership of land. It arouses out of development in Western Europe during Medieval
times, when rival kingdoms were engaged in conflict resources, particularly land. Rulers grant their
followers or vassals the right to manage parcels of land. Vassals are served by peasant workers who
cultivate the land and tend to the animals in farm. In return of their services, they are provided
military protection. Land owners are considered the most powerful and influential members of
society.

Industrial society

• Based on the use of specialized machinery in the production of goods and services.

Post-industrial society

• Marked by the establishment of societies based on knowledge, information, and the state of services.
Led by the human mind aided by highly advanced technology, the trend has shifted from industry to
the generation, storage, manipulation, and sale of information.

Virtual societies

• a society where people organize themselves through communication technology and internet, a
product of post-industrial society.

Activity 1

Direction: Relate the discussion on the development of the forms of society to the historical development of
Philippine society. Make a timeline identifying which period in our history corresponds to each form of
society.

Guide Questions:

1. Discuss the different form of society. Which is the most advance and the most backward?

2. If you will be given a chance to choose, which society would you like to live with? Explain.

3. How has your community influenced you as a person? What traits or behavior can you directly
attribute to your upbringing in society?

4. Which traits or values identify us a Filipino? Why these traits and values are considered important by
Philippine society?

HOW DOES SOCIETY INFLUENCE OUR DEVELOPMENT AS A PERSON?

• The person and the society have a very dynamic relationship in which cannot exist without the other.
• Society influences our development as person in various ways.
• Society also transforms human relations, which leads to the transformation of its members.

HOW DOES SOCIETY ENABLE ME TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON?

• Society recognizes the capability of the person to develop, and provides its members with
opportunities to better themselves.
• Person can also undertake to contribute to society through their decisions and actions.
