The effects of COVID-19 pandemic on university students’ mental health
Mental health issues are the leading impediment to academic success. Mental illness can affect
students’ motivation, concentration, and social interactions and are crucial factors for students to
succeed in higher education. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into focus the mental health of
various affected populations. It creates new stressors including fear and worry for oneself or loved
ones, constraints on physical movement and social activities due to quarantine, and sudden and
radical lifestyle changes. A recent review of virus outbreaks and pandemics documented stressors
such as infection fears, frustration, boredom, inadequate supplies, inadequate information, financial
loss, and stigma

Online classes might be the alternative option for students to cope with their studies instead of
face-to-face classes but its effective wise, online classes are not really up to bar compared to actual
classes. This is because, students get easily distracted during online lectures as it is boring. this leads
to the students falling behind in classes which becomes a routine and then shows it’s results in
exams. So, when the students do not perform well in their tests, their mental health gets disturbed
because it is too much to handle.

Other than that, covid 19 also took a toll on almost every household financial wise. Some
parents lose job because of working in Singapore. As an elaboration, they have to choose either
between working there full time or come back to Malaysia to stay with their family. This puts them
in a tough spot. They must lose one if they choose the other option. during pandemic, most of the
parents could not go to work due to the cases so high and the whole country was under lockdown.
this made them go broke.

Next, the most affected people in this pandemic situation is the students especially the
youngsters and the students who living alone. As we know, the youngsters nowadays are constantly
on social media and the information in it can possibly cause anxiety to them. The bad news that
always happen and spread about Covid-19 itself will make people panic and worried, especially
when it is about new cases that arise every day. When the cases won’t decrease, it would lead to
lockdown which is people need to stay at home for a long time. This will lead to social isolation
because they not exposed with the world. If the isolation constantly happens, it will caused social
anxiety disorder, which will make them feel scared to communicate with people around.

The overall understanding of COVID-19 has expanded throughout the world, yet its immediate
and long-term mental health impacts on the student are challenging to estimate. Measures to
prevent the virus from spreading and tackling the uncertain situations pose risks to the psychological
well-being of the student. It is essential that the guardians, educational institutions, and health
authorities protect and guard the mental health of student consistently through open
communication and facilitate professional counselling to address stressors
