_____ 8. How do you think convection currents in the mantle affect lithospheric plates?
A. Convection current serves as a driving force for the movement of plates.
B. Convection current within the mantle provide movement for plates.
C. Tectonic plates move towards or away from each other due to the convection current in the
mantle
D. All the choices are correct.

3. Analyze the type of plate boundary existing between A – B, B – C, and C – D.

Guide Questions:
1. How may tectonic plates are there in the diagram? What is your basis for this?

2. What type of plate boundary exist between A and B?

3. What type of plate boundary exist between B and C?

4. What type of plate boundary exist between C and D?

5. How do you think the movement of tectonic plates related to convection currents?

ACTIVITY 8C - MOVEMENT OF MAGMA IN THE MANTLE

A. Directions: Analyze the figure below and answer the questions that follow.

Guide Questions:
1. Where does the heat energy come from that drives the convection current in the mantle?

2. How does the increase in the temperature of the magma in the lower mantle affects behavior?

3. As the magma in the lower mantle moves towards the asthenosphere, what happens to its energy?

4. How does the decrease in the temperature of the magma along the asthenosphere affects it behavior?

5. How do you think the convection in the mantle affect the crust material above it?

B. Directions: Complete the graphic organizer by describing the cause and effect of convection current
in the mantle and the result of these actions. See attached rubric for grading.

ACTIVITY 8D - HOW DO WE COOK BY CONVECTION?

Palitaw is a kind of sweet, chewy, and flattened rice cake. This Filipino rice cake is prepared by soaking glutinous
rice grains in water overnight and then processed as a dough. The dough is flattened into small pieces and
cooked in boiling water until they float; this is the reason it was called palitaw. Based on your knowledge about
convection current, make a sketch that can explain why palitaw floats in boiling water. In a separate sheet, sketch
the convection current occurring in making the said rice cake.
The scoring rubric below will be used by your teacher in assessing your output.
