What is an adverb?
 Tells us more about an adjective, verb or
another adverb.
For example:
1. Ali is tremendously intelligent.
2. The birds are singing cheerfully in the trees.
3. He sang very beautifully.

Adverbs of frequency

 To say how often we do things; or how often things


happen.
They are:
Always, sometimes, often/frequently, normally, usually, occasionally,
rarely/hardly ever, never, once, twice…
Example:
1. Ahmad always wears local clothes.
2. I usually have my breakfast at 5 o’clock.
3. He never smokes.

Adverbs of manner

 Tell us how something happens and is done.


They are:
Cheerfully, efficiently, painfully, secretly, quietly, peacefully, carefully, slowly,
badly, closely, easily, well fast, quickly…
Example:
1. The baby is playing cheerfully.
2. They are suffering painfully.
3. She is running quickly.
Note: most of these adverbs ended in “ly”.

Adverbs of time

 Tell us about when something happens


They are:
Now, yesterday, tomorrow, later, already, soon, yet, tonight, today, then, last
month/year/week…

Example
1. He is ganging out with his friends tonight..
2. We will see you later.
3. They have already gone when we got there.

 Tell us where something happens or where something is
 They are:
above, abroad, far, somewhere, nowhere, here, there, upstairs, inside,
behind, elsewhere, under, indoors…
 Example:
1. He goes everywhere with his father.
2. Let’s play upstairs.
3. Open the box and see what is inside it.

Adverbs of duration

 Tell us how long an action takes to be done.


 They are:
temporarily, overnight, for two days, a very long time, just a moment…

 Examples:
 I will stay there for three days.
 She has been to Kabul for a very long time.
 We should study permanently.

Adverbs of emphasis

 Describe adjectives or other adverbs.


 Example:
1. She is incredibly beautiful.
2. The weather is too hot.
3. She is tremendously tired.

4. These papers are totally useless.
