LESSON PLAN in ENGLISH 9

Date: March 6, 2024


Time Allocation: 1 hour per session
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and other
text types serve as means of preserving unchanging values in a changing world; also
how to use the features of a full-length play, tense consistency, modals, active and
passive constructions plus direct and indirect speech to enable him/her competently
performs in a full-length play.
Performance Standard: The learner competently performs in a full- length play through applying effective
verbal and non-verbal strategies and ICT resources based on the following criteria:
Focus, Voice, Delivery and Dramatic Conventions.
Learning Competencies: EN9G-IIId-21: Use verbals.
I. Objectives: Towards the end of the period, the students should be able to:
a. identify gerunds in the sentence;
b. value the importance of gerunds through identifying its functions; and
c. determine the function of a gerund in a sentence.

(2 minutes) Instruction: Review the previous lesson by transforming the verb into its equivalent
verbals.

C. Analysis Instruction: Congratulations on surviving the overview on verbals, you did well! Now,
(5 minutes) we proceed on a deeper topic on the functions of gerund. As you go through this
worksheet, consider the following questions:
 How do the functions of gerund change the meaning of the sentence?
 What contribution does gerunds bring in the sentence?
D. Abstraction Discussion
(20 minutes) Just like nouns, gerunds have 5 functions. A gerund can be a subject, subject
complement, object, object of preposition, and appositives.
Gerund as SUBJECT
Every sentence must have a subject, and that subject will always be a noun or
pronoun.
Reading is a very productive hobby.

Gerund as SUBJECT COMPLEMENT


A subject complement normally follows a linking verb (LV) such as be, become, or
seem and gives more information about the subject of the sentence.
Studying is searching for the unknown.

Gerund as DIRECT OBJECT


A direct object is a noun that receives the action described by the verb.
Direct object: My sister Lucia dislikes eating.

Gerund as OBJECT OF PREPOSITION


Is the noun or pronoun being acted on, referenced, or affected by the preposition in
a prepositional phrase.
He was reprimanded for writing on the classroom wall.

Gerund as APPOSITIVE
A gerund used as an appositive immediately follows another noun in order to further define
or identify it. It is usually found in between of commas.
My mother’s passion, painting, makes her happy and fulfilled.

E. Application Activity 2: Identification.


(15 minutes) Instruction: Read the sentences carefully, then identify the gerund according to the
given function. Underline the gerund and dissect the sentence by determining the
subject (s), verb (v), subject complement (SC), object (O), object of preposition (OP),
appositive (A).

A. Gerund as SUBJECT
Example:
Obeying our parent’s is a safe thing to do.

3. Taking breaks throughout the day can improve your focus.

4. Cleaning can be a chore, but it feels good to finish.

B. Gerund as SUBJECT COMPLEMENT


Example:
Her biggest passion is traveling the world.

C. Gerund as OBJECT
Example:
George and Martha now regret renting a house.

1. He admitted committing a crime.

2. They appreciate you taking the time to help them.

3. She has always dreamed of opening her own bakery.

4. Joe doesn’t like getting up early.

5. I prioritize getting enough sleep.

D. Gerund as OBJECT OF PREPOSITION


Example:
She has finally succeeded in getting a license.

1. He is confident in achieving his goals with hard work and dedication.

2. She is proud of contributing to the team's success.

3. They are surprised by discovering a hidden gem in the city.

4. We are grateful for having the opportunity to travel abroad.

5. He is worried about forgetting essential items for the trip.

E. Gerund as APPOSITIVE
Example:
The best gift, spending time together, is priceless.

1. Their weakness, craving sugary treats, sometimes gets the best of them.

2. Her passion, helping children in need, led her to become a teacher.

3. Taking a walk, enjoying the fresh air, is refreshing.

4. Helping others, volunteering at the shelter, is rewarding.

5. Traveling the world, exploring new cultures, is my dream.
