MIDTERM

1. Linguistics is the study of language that includes the study of its structure such as
morphology, phonology, syntax, and semantics. It is investigating the languages and the
characteristics of the language as well. Linguistics has great purposes. They are
informative, directive, and expressive. First, informative means the communication of
information. For example, the informative function affirms or denies proposition, as
science or the statement of the fact. Next, expressive reports the feelings or attitudes of
the writer or the speaker. It evokes feelings in the reader or the listener. For example, In
reading poetry and literature. It connects the feelings of the reader to the story and
understand it by relating it to the reality. Lastly, directive is the language used for
preventing overt action. For example, the sign “Nonsmoking area” can be used to mean
“Do not smoke in this area”.

2. Applied linguistics is the application of linguistics theories and findings to solve the
language related problems. It puts practical use such as the study of language in the
brain, translation, second learning language, studying linguistics social settings, and
many other such uses while descriptive linguistics is concern with the description of two
languages. It is the work of analyzing and describing how language is spoken or how it
was spoken in the past by a group of people in a speech community. It tries to
understand why this type of structure of sentence has been used by the speaker.

3. (1) Descriptive language is using the descriptive words or parts of speech such as
adjectives, adverbs, or verbs to give the story detail. It can also create by using figurative
language such as similes and metaphors. Descriptive language attracts the reader’s
attention and interest and how are they going to express their emotions by analyzing it.
The author must use helpful approaches to catch reader’s attention.

(2) Psycholinguistics is the study of how language affects the mind. It focuses on
understanding and describing the psychological mechanisms that people need to learn and use
language. It investigates things like shirt and long-term memory, perceptual techniques, and
voice perception based on language models. Psycholinguistics conducts research on speech
development and language development how individuals of all ages comprehend and produce
language.

(3) Sociolinguistics is a branch of study in the field of linguistics that is concerned with
how language functions in all aspects of society. It includes cultural norms, expectations, and
context, on the way language is used, and society’s effect on language. For example, studies of
language variation on a particular axis, like gender or social class. It may be groups, like
immigrants or second language speakers.

(4) Phonetics and Phonemics are two branches of linguistics which deal with the study of
sounds. Therefore, they are closely related to each other, but phonetics deal with the study
of one aspect of sounds like pronunciation as the abstract alphabet is to enormous variety of
scripts and fonts while the phonemics deal with the study of the other side of sounds, the
way we understand those sounds. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between the two
branches and their contents should not be mixed with each other.

(5) Discovery procedures in linguistic the scientific study of language. The word was first used
in the middle of the 19th century to emphasize the difference between the old and new. It
was developed by the speaker’s generation to generation. People adapted the changing of
the language, and they easily used it on their time. It creates our world, our identity, and our
relationships.

4. Mission is a general statement of how you will achieve our vision and vision is what you
want to accomplish.
As a graduate school student of Guimaras State of University, I will truly achieve mission
and vision of the school by complying the rules and policies of the university, striving for
academic excellence, professional and personal success of a diverse graduate student. It
enhances the intellectual life of the university by enabling us and other professional
students to undertake scholarly study and advanced research and prepare for
professional work. I am a teacher so we, professionals should not stop learning, since
our main goal is to produce productive and skillful learners.
