INTRODUCTION

The Problem and its Background

Statement of the Problem

In the pursuit of this academic exploration, our primary objective was to delve

into the intricate relationship between social media usage and mental health among

CHASS (College of Humanities and Social Sciences) students at Caraga State

University. Particularly, this research aimed to address the subsequent inquiry:

1. What is the prevalence and pattern of social media use among CSU students?

2. How does the level of mental health vary among the respondents?

3. What are the associations between social media use, mental health, and

academic performance among CHASS students at Caraga State University,

considering potential differences across gender, year level, and program of

study?

4. Are there significant differences in the demographic profiles of respondents

in terms of:

i. Prevalence of social media use?

ii. Occurrence of mental health issues?

iii. Impact of social media use on the academic performance of CHASS

students at Caraga State University?

5. Which students require intervention for mental health issues associated with

social media use?

Hypotheses

H₀ – There is no significant difference in social media use patterns between

different demographic groups (e.g., gender, year level, program of study) among

CHASS students at Caraga State University.

Theoretical Framework

This study was founded upon the Social Cognitive Theory proposed by Albert

Bandura in 1986. The theory serves as a fundamental framework to investigate the

intricate relationship between social media use and mental health. According to

Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, individuals acquire and develop behaviors through

cognitive processes, social interactions, and observational learning. In the context of our

study, this theory illuminates that excessive engagement with social media platforms

can displace face-to-face communication, which plays a crucial role in fulfilling social

and psychological needs. Consequently, this displacement may have potential

implications for mental health outcomes.

By employing the lens of the Social Cognitive Theory, we operationalize the

notion of displaced behavior by emphasizing the interplay between individuals' social

and psychological needs in the context of their motives and expectations of mass media.

Bandura's theory suggests that the absence of physical activity and reduced face-to-face

communication resulting from excessive social media use can exert harmful effects on
mental health. Through our investigation, we seek to examine how the dynamics of

social media use, particularly its displacement of traditional forms of interpersonal

communication, contribute to the observed impacts on mental health. (Bandura, 1986)In

relation to our research endeavor, we proposed that the excessive use of social media by

students would have a negative influence on their mental health. However, when

considering the role of demographic factors, particularly the quality of peer

relationships, we anticipate that these factors will also interact with social media use

and impact mental health outcomes. Specifically, if individuals experience unpleasant

or problematic peer relationships, it may exacerbate the detrimental effects of social

media use on their mental health. Moreover, demographic factors such as gender, year

level, and program of study may further moderate the relationship between social

media use, peer relationships, and mental health, potentially influencing the prevalence

and severity of symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and other mental health

issues..

b. Mental health state

4. To determine if there is a significant difference in each of the respondents

demographic profile in terms of:

a. prevalence of social media use

b. mental health issues

c. impact of social media use on the academic performance of CHASS students

in Caraga State University.

5. To determine which of the students needs to have an intervention regarding

mental health issues in using social media
