PHRASAL VERBS (put forward, refer to, start off)

YOUR JOURNEY

Phrasal verbs are idiomatic phrases consisting of a verb and another element, typically
an adverb or a preposition, or a combination of both. They are widely used by native
speakers of English so it’s a good idea to try to learn some of them.

We’ll discuss three of the phrasal verbs to describe communication. I’m sure you’ve
already heard it and will able to understand the meaning by the context.

Put forward- to state or publish an idea so that people can consider and discuss it.

Ex. (This theory was first put forward by American scientist).

Refer to- to talk about something or someone.

Ex. (The letter referred to some technical problems).

Start off- to cause something to begin.

Ex. ( It was terry who started off the argument).
