LABORATORY SHEET: PLASTIC PROCESSING

TITLE : 3D Printing
OBJECTIVE :

The objectives of the experiment are as follows;

a) To study the principle operation of 3D printing.
b) To produce a plastic part using 3D printing.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT :

The related equipment, machines, accessories, and materials involved during the demostration must be listed in
the report. A brief description of the instrumentation/set-up may be included if necessary.

INTRODUCTION/THEORY:

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file.
The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process, the object is
created by laying down successive layers of material until completion of the object. Complex shapes can be
produce with 3D printing and less material used than traditional manufacturing methods. Figure 1 shows an
example of a 3D printing object.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE :

A briefing session will be conducted before students experimenting with 3D printer. Please take note of the
procedures to produce the plastic product using the principle operation of 3D printing. Method of approach as
followed:Students are required;
i. to describe the safety procedure in handling 3D printing machine.
ii. to describe the preparation of the CAD model and overall process until the completion of 3D part.
iii. to inspect the product quality and make comparison with the CAD model.

EXPERIMENTAL FINDINGS :

At the end of the lab session, students should be able to explain and describe the following key findings: -
• Basic elements of 3D printer’s hardware and software.
• Suitable polymer materials for the process.
• Identify the principle operations and the significant parameter setting.
