PROBLEM:
Determine the input power to an electric motor (ηm = 90%) supplying a pump
(ηp = 80%) delivering 5.5 l/s of water (ρ = 1000 kg/m3, µ=0.001 kg/ms) from
tank1 to tank 2 as shown below. Consider that the pipeline length is 80m and
diameter is 60 mm galvanized steel (assume surface roughness k=0.15mm).

SOLUTION:

V=Q/A=0.0055/(πx0.062 /4)=1.96m/s
ρVD
ℜ=
μ
= 1000x1.96x0.06/0.001= 1.176x105

k/d=0.15/60= 0.0025
From moody diagram, f=0.0051 (from chart 2)
Note: Value from chart 1 is 0.021 but answer will be the same using eq.
hf= fLu2/2gD
hf= 4fL/D x V2/2g = 4x0.0051x80 x 1.962 = 5.32m
0.06 2x9.8

two bends(each k=0.9) tank entry(k=0.5) ,exit loss(k=1)

ho= ∑ki X [V2/2g]= (2x0.9+0.5+1)x1.962 /2x9.8  =0.6461m
hsys = hf+ hz+ ho = 5.32+30+0.6461= 35.9611m

Input power P= ρ.g.Q.hsys/ηm x ηp

= 1000x 9.81x0.0055x35.9611 =1.726kW

PROBLEM:
Determine the elevation Z1 for a flow rate of 4 L/s. The density of water is ρ =
1000 kg/m3 and µ=0.001 kg/m.s. Consider that the pipeline length is 50m and
diameter is 60 mm galvanized steel (assume surface roughness k=0.15mm).

SOLUTION:

V=Q/A= 0.004/(πx0.062 /4)= 1.42m/s

Re= ρVD/µ= 1000x1.42 x 0.06/0.001 =8520
k/d = 0.15/60= 0.0025
friction factor: 0.03583

Therefore, the total loss will be:

hsys = hf+ hz+ ho
hf= 4fL/D x V2/2g = 4x 0.0358x50 x 42 = 97.315m
0.06 2x9.81
ho =kix [V2/2g]=0.5+2x0.3+0.2+1.06x(1.422 /2x9.81)= 1.408m
hsys. = 1.408+97.315+10= 108.723m
