1 Description

1.1 Purpose
The 143--021 Telescopic bearing sight and the 143--024 bearing sight are used in con-
junction with a bearing repeater for taking bearings of terrestrial and electrical objects.

1.3 Construction and Principle

The design of the device is such as to enable it to be put on the bezel of a repeater com-
pass. By its two claws that fit accurately over the lower edge of the bezel it is secured in
the position required. A set pin fitted in the base plate and the centering bush on the
glass disc of the repeater compass ensures accurate centering of the device. By about
one turn of the knurled nuts the grip of the claws can be varied so as to enable the de-
vice either to be turned smoothly or to be fixed to the bezel so that it cannot move off
position. Fitted on top of the casing are the two sights required for taking beatings of ter-
restrial objects. With the fore sight turned down, its V--shaped sight notch can be used
for taking coarse bearings of objects located in the horizontal plane.

Through a small window fitted in the base plate a partial view of the graduation of the
360 compass card (approx. 25) is reflected to the vision of the observer, enabling him to
read true bearings. Relative bearings can be read off the graduation of the bezel against
an index line provided on the lower part of the casing.

2 Operating Instructions

2.1 General
Devices of this kind are precision Instruments and should be treated such, so do not use
any force whenever using them.
When not in use for a longer period of time, the device should be kept in the protective
box provided for that purpose.

2.2 Putting the device on the bearing repeater

Put the device on the bezel of the compass, using one hand. All that is to do now is to
take care that the set pin is inserted into the centering bush of the compass. Next, cause
the claws, fitting over the longer edge of the bezel, by about one turn of the knurled nuts
to grip slightly so that the device can just be swung round. When temporarily not in use,
the device should be prevented from moving off position by tightening the knurled nuts
accordingly.

2.3 Examples of applications

2.3.1 Pencil --of--light method (using the 143--021 and 143--024 types)
This method permits direct sun bearings without using the colored visors. Proceed as
follow: Turn up the fore sight to its vertical position. When using the 143--021 type turn
down the aft sight. The rays of the sun will pass through the 2--mm slit of the fore sight,
forming a pencil of light that will produce a sharply--defined line on the surface of the top
side of the device.

Example of using the 143--024 bearing sight

As shown in the illustration, a pin is provided

near to the aft sight on the imaginary line that
passes along the top side of the device.
Orientate the device so that the line produced
by the pencil of light passes through said pin or
the slit of the aft sight turned down, respectively.
True bearings of the sun can now be read directly
off the 360 card of the repeater, using the
eyepiece.
Relative bearings of the sun can be read off the
bezel of the repeater compass against the index
line provided below the eyepiece.

2.3.2 Taking bearings of terrestrial and celestial objects

A1: Taking coarse bearings by means of V--notch

A2: Taking bearings by means of aft and fore sights (e. g. bow and beam bearings
when using the 143--021 and 143--024 types)

B1: Taking bearings by means of telescope and simultaneously reading off true
bearings (applies only to the 143--021 type)

B2: Taking coarse bearings of celestial objects by means of aft and fore sights
(when using the 143--021 and 143--024 bearing sights)

B3: Taking bearings of celestial objects by means of telescope and Astral--mirror and
simultaneously reading off true bearings.

2.4 Taking the device off the bearing repeater compass

At first loosen both knurled nuts by about 1 turn. Take hold of the device in such a way
that the knurled nut on the eyepiece side is pressed inwards. Now the claw releases the
device so that it can be taken off in the upward direction.

3.2 General
Insignificant traces of dirt and scratches on the Surfaces of the eyepiece and mirror do
not affect the usability of the device. However, if these surface are very dirty, moisten the
deposits and clear them by means of a soft cloth.

Important Note Do NOT wipe off any deposit of salt when dry, use sweetwater
to wipe of the salty deposit.
Neither oil nor grease must be applied to joints and shafts.

3.3 Replacing the Drying Cartridge

It is necessary that this should be done only in a room where the relative humidity is low.

1. Turn out the cartridge holder.

2. Take the fresh cartridge out of its airtight envelope and put it into the holder so that
the small openings remain visible.

3. Turn in the cartridge holder, making sure that the sealing is in its proper position.

If no spare cartridge is available, regenerate the used one by heating it up to anything

between 100 and 150 C by means of a heating plate and allow it to dry out for up to 15
minutes.
Meanwhile, the holder should remain in its cavity so as to keep out dust and dampness.
