C. Presenting Sometimes, we are concerned with portions of

of the Lesson What portion of the population are senior
citizens? What percent of all the rabbit are male?
How many percent of the population have IQs
greater than 120? These are some of the
questions which require population proportion
(p). In this chapter, we will be dealing with the
estimate of population proportion p using large
sample size(n≥ 30 ¿ .
Estimating population proportion using small
size is not included in introductory statistics
course. Estimating population proportion is
similar to estimating population mean. When the
sample proportion ^p
(pronounce as p-hat) is computed from a large
sample n, then the interval estimate of the
population proportion p at a certain α can be
computed as:
Where

^p=sample proportion
q^ = 1- ^p
n = sample size
zα / 2 =z value that leaves an area of α /2

from the formula, is called margin of error

G. Finding Let’s say you want to know the percentage of

Practical people in your state that smoke. Polling every
Application of person in the state is not feasible, so you conduct
Concepts and a simple random sample of 1,000 people and ask
Skills in Daily them their smoking preference and determine that
Living 7% of them indicate they smoke.
