I. CONCEPT NOTE
A. MOLE FRACTION
Mole fraction of solute is defined as the mole ratio between solute and solution while mole fraction
of solvent is the mole ratio between solvent and solution.
= =
 = mole of solute = mole fraction of solute
 = mole of solvent = mole fraction of solvent

 = mole of solution = mole of solution

= + = + =1

Example # 1. MOLE OF EACH COMPONENT IN SOLUTION.

Calculate the mole fraction of benzene, C6H6, carbon tetrachloride, CCl4 and acetone, C3H 6O. in the
solution containing 15.6 mole of benzene, 23.8 moles carbon tetrachloride, and 37.9 moles acetone,
Given: = mole of C6H6 = 15.6 mol
= mole of CCl4 = 23.8 mol
mole of C3H 6O = 37.9 mol
Unknown:
Solution:
 Total mole of solution
= + +
= 15.6 + 23.8 + 37.9 = 77.3 mole

 Mole fraction of C6H6, CCl4 , C3H 6O

= = = 0.202

= = = 0.308

= = = 0.490
 To check the total mole fraction of solution
= + + = 0.202 + 0.308 + 0.490 = 1
Example # 2. MASS OF SOLUTE (g) AND VOLUME OF SOLVENT (L)
Potassium Iodide, KI, 176.5 g is added to 1.5L of water. Calculate the mole fraction of each
compound in a solution. Density of water 1 g/ml.
Given: mass of solute= 176.5 g
mass of solvent =1.5L = 1500 mL = 1500 g
density of water = 1 g/mL
Unknown: - mole fraction of KI
– mole fraction of H20
Solution:
 Conversion of mass to mole, use the MM= molar mass
MM: KI = K: 1 x 39.1 = 39.1
I: 1 x 126.9 = 126.9
166
MM: H2O = H: 2 x 1.01 = 2.02
O: 1 x 16 = 16
18.02

 To solve mole of solute and solvent

176.5 g KI x = 1.06 mole KI

1500 g H2O x = 83.24 mole H2O

= 1.06 + 83.24 = 84.30 mole of solution

 To solve mole fraction of solute and solvent

= = = 0.013

= = = 0.987

 To check the total mole fraction

= + = 0.013 + 0.987 = 1
