Science Lesson Plan: Electric Circuits

This lesson plan outlines a science lesson on electric circuits for 5th grade students. The objectives are for students to identify conditions for a bulb to light up, cooperate in activities, and draw/label circuit parts. The lesson involves a game to identify materials, reviewing previous lessons, setting rules, discussing circuits and their components, demonstrating open/closed circuits, and assessing student understanding. Students will draw and label circuits. The lesson aims to teach what is needed for a bulb to light in a complete electric circuit.

Cooperating Teacher
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
a. identify the conditions necessary to make a bulb light up;
b. cooperate in every class activity; and
c. draw and label the parts of an electric circuit.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Infer the conditions necessary to make a bulb light up.
Materials: Cartolina, Marker, Pictures, Tape

III. Procedures
A. Preparatory Activities
Teachers Activity Students Activity
1. Drill (Short Game)

Good morning class!

Good morning, teacher.
How are you today?
We are fine, teacher.
Okay, I’m glad to hear that.
I hope all of you are very much excited to
learn and discover more about science.

Are you excited or not?

We are excited!
Okay, let’s start!

This morning we are going to have a game. I

will group the class into two, the team who
will get the first correct answers will win and
will be given bonus points on our other
activity later.

I will give each group two, small pieces of

illustration board and you will write using
chalk whether the examples shown to you
belong to the categories block, absorb, or
transmit. I will show you eight (8) kinds of
materials and all you have to do is raise the
illustration board above to show your
answers.
Yes, teacher.
Did you get me?

Umbrella
Jacket
Sunglasses
Tree
Book
Plastic Bottle
Eyeglasses
Center table glass

2. Review

Okay, now let's move on. Who can recall

what we tackled at the last meeting?
Relate the ability of materials to block,
absorb, or transmit light to its use.

What are these types of materials? Translucent, transparent, and opaque

materials.
You are right! Who can describe each
material?
- Translucent material allows some
light to pass through.
- Transparent materials allow all the
light to pass through.
- Opaque materials do not allow all the
light to pass through them.
Excellent! You really understood our
previous lesson. Now we will proceed to our
next lesson.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Motivation

Arrange the letters to form the correct word.

____

_______

______
____

2. Presentation of the Lesson

From the activity we had a while ago, what

do you think will be our lesson for today?
I think it’s about light and electricity.
Okay, what else?
I think it’s about lighting up a bulb because
there are batteries and involved.
Both of you are right!

Today, we will be talking about the

conditions necessary to make a bulb light up.

3. Setting of Standard

Let us set our rules first in this class. Do you

have any suggestions?
-Avoid noisiness
What else?
-Listen attentively when the teacher or
someone is talking in front.
Last one?
-Cooperate in every class activity.
Okay, very good! That’s very important.

4. Discussion

An electric circuit is composed of

interconnected electrical components. These
components form a complete path of an
electric circuit.

Parts of an Electric Circuit

Power Source- the source of energy to move

electrons.

What can we use as a power source?

A dry cell or battery.
Connector- the wire or other conductors that
link all parts of the circuit and create a path
where current flows.

Give me an example of a material that we can

use as a conductor.
Metals like silver, copper, and aluminum
wire are good conductors of electricity.

Load- a load is an output device that uses

electricity.

What are the output devices that use

electricity?
A light bulb, appliances, computers, and
gadgets.

Switch- controls the flow of electricity; can

connect or disconnect the path of electric
current.

Please read aloud.

Close Circuit- makes the light bulb light up

because the path of electricity is complete,
allowing electricity to flow through it. Close Circuit- makes the light bulb light up
because the path of electricity is complete,
allowing electricity to flow through it.
What happens to the bulb after we connect
the light switch to the wire?
The bulb will light up.
Correct! The bulb can now light up because
electrical components are now connected
from one end of the circuit to the other end.

Did you get it already?

Yes, teacher.
Please read aloud.

Open Circuit- electricity does not follow in

this kind of circuit because there is a gap or
no complete path from one end of the circuit
to the other end. Open Circuit- electricity does not follow in
this kind of circuit because there is a gap or
no complete path from one end of the circuit
to the other end.

Will the bulb light up?

No
Why?
Because the wires are not connected so the
electricity cannot flow throughout the bulb.
Very good!

How will you differentiate between a closed

and open circuit?
In a closed circuit, the electrical components
are connected and the electricity can flow
freely while in an open circuit, the wires or
conductors are broken which resulted in a
failed flow of electricity.

Very good!
5. Generalization

What is an electric circuit?

Composed of interconnected electrical
components. These components form a
complete path of an electric circuit.

What are the four (4) parts of an electric

circuit?
Power source, connector, load, and switch.

What happens if the conductor is broken or

has a gap?
The bulb won’t light up because the
electricity can’t flow successfully.

What is a closed circuit?

Makes the light bulb light up because the
path of electricity is complete, allowing
electricity to flow through it.

What’s the difference between closed and

open circuits? In a closed circuit, the electrical components
are connected and the electricity can flow
freely while in an open circuit, the wires or
conductors are broken which resulted in a
failed flow of electricity

6. Application (By pair)

Draw and label each part of an electric

circuit.
